Mississippi State

Meaning what? We are even better than the you thought? It's the frigging NIT, the distant secondary ball. We haven't danced in the main ball for a decade. Is this what our once proud program has come to, clinging onto relative losing/winning margins?

It means a lot of things, but first please remember we had one of the best regular seasons in the school history last year and we were playing our best ball at the end of the season.

What that score tells us if that our team missing 4 of our top 8 players including 2 multi-year all conference players and the 10th best 3 point shooting player in the nation came close to making the finals of the NIT.

It means Mooney did a terrific job coaching the team in the NIT. Many people on this board make it sound like any coach could handle those type of losses with no problem and that is complete BS. You take away 3 starters including 2 all conference players from any A10 team and they are not going to play as well.

It means that our team has a lot of depth and many of the players have received unfair criticism on this board, like Matt Grace.

It means that some people on this board our blinded by hatred of the coach, which is unfortunate for them, because I think Mooney has a good chance of being the coach until he retires in 15 to 20 years.

What it tells me is we have 16 seasons of mostly frustration. Sugar coat as you wish.

If your employee had gotten the job done rarely in 16 years, why would you believe the future would be different? There is a loooong record here. Compare it to multiple coaches at VCU over the same period and what they have accomplished. Most Spider fans are sick of excuses. We want results.

With a game as compelling as Mississippi State against whoever they played today, its a real wonder the NCAA bothers with its boring Final 4 Tournament.

I don’t know how old you are but I’m old enough to survive another 20 years of UR bball. If we only go to the tournament 3-4 times over that time it’s safe to say I’ll give up on the program.

Would you be ok with that few ncaa berths? Because if you have any respect for statistics or history, that’s what is likely to happen.

It’s also worth noting, the vast majority of posters here do not hate Mooney, there may be a few who are vitriolic but most people just know we can do better than this.

If Mooney is the coach here for more than 30 years, he will be one of the longest tenured coaches in the history of college basketball. Which would be completely absurd.

This season was one of Chris Mooney`s best coaching efforts to date.

1. Last season was a very good regular season, however the team was firmly on the bubble (not guaranteed a NCAA bid). Most here care about getting to the post season (NCAA’s), not how a regular season compared to other UR regular seasons.

2. “4-8 of our top players”? I don’t buy the narrative of losing Nick as an excuse for this season. He was unfortunately lost well before the season began. To me it is the equivalent of losing Kwan Fore to a transfer. A coach doesn’t get credit the whole next season for winning without him. Also, I don’t think Crabtree has shown enough to be considered a top 8 player on the team.

3. I thought Mooney did well in the NIT with his coaching. My bigger issue is where was that coaching all year? Mooney clearly can coach, it is consistently getting the most out of a team (be it for a full game or a full season) that he struggles with in my opinion.

4. I hate using this transitive property of sporting games, especially college basketball. So much is different between 1 game to the next. Using the transitive property, Richmond should be in the sweet 16 because we beat Loyola. But at the same time, using the transitive property Richmond should be a 9-16 team because we lost to LaSalle. You are what your record says you are, and projecting results using the transitive property is a fools errand in my opinion.

5. I’ve said all year I think we had depth. I’ve also consistently hoped that we would use it more. It took 2 injuries to starters to see it.

6. If Mooney goes to 10 NCAA tournaments over the next 15-20 years, I will be happy for him to stay. If it is 3-4, (or the 2 he has done in his first 16), Richmond basketball will continue to be a very split group of fans.

I’m fascinated by how some of the posters on this board have been invigorated by our historic run to the NIT quarterfinals. Certainly nothing wrong with being positive and I understand that folks are tired of all the gloom and doom Mooney posts but this 1-1 run in a watered down NIT seems to have justified the last 16 years and washed away all our issues. Again, great to be positive and praise the young guys who stepped up during the last two games but we still have the same issues and ceiling...and always will under Chris’s direction.

And he still did not get to NCAAs
With a good coaching hire this program could be at a place where making the NIT and winning a few games is considered a rebuilding year. Apparently that goal sounds outlandish to our AD and it seems a good portion of our fanbase. It’s literally where our arch rival is as a program. Even bringing up such goals will get you ridiculed “why do you hate Mooney? Why do you have this anti-UR agenda?”....it’s quite the contrary...I see so much potential in our basketball program but we literally are self imposing a ceiling on our potential and what we could be.

That is a great point. Our guys will be wondering what could have been.

LOL, you're enjoyable. What do you think the level of wonderment would be considering they beat Loyola-Chi? Come on, keep up with the fantasy posts and I'll try to give you my best crazy reply. Old people have a lot of time on their hands. Just a heads up, don't press reply about a wrong call regarding officiating until you go to the official NCAA rulebook.

Nobody hates Mooney. They hate being in the same place most every year. Our style as well as expected results are predictable on balance. Some years are better, & some years are worse, but the mean is mediocrity. For most years, we are on the outside looking in. The coach reaps what he sows. The criticisms are based upon facts stretched out over 16 years. Long term performance is on the captain of the ship.

Actually, isn't he going to be here until he has more NCAA wins than Boeheim?

I don't have time right now but would like to take another look at each 13 season segment.
1979-1980 to 1991-1992
1992-1993 to 2004-2005
2005-2006 to 2017-2018
in terms of NCAA appearances, NIT appearances and Seasons with twice or more wins than losses on Selection Sunday for all current A-10 teams.
Next up would be 2018-2019 to 2030-2031...

This is Richmond basketball. Celebrate being just ok. Now shut up and buy more tickets before they go and find more new fans.

I think Memphis is a solid tournament level team. 2 close losses to elite 8 Houston knocked them out.

And donate $$$, don't forget to donate. And don't bother complaining because "we'll just get new fans who are happy with these results "

What does this have to do with Mississippi State vs LA Tech in 2021?

Ah, the "transitive property." We were close to making the 3rd round of a 4-round tournament (1 less than usual), in which 5 teams declined invitations.

We won one game - against a MAC team. We were a 2 seed, beat a 3 seed and lost to a 4 seed. 1-1.

It means that our team has a lot of depth and many of the players have received unfair criticism on this board, like Matt Grace.
Yes, the criticism of Grace in these parts has been a little overboard. He got a chance to show his offensive skill set. Still not sure what that has to do with MS St's semifinal score.

The idea that Mooney has a good chance to be our coach for over 30 years may be the scariest thing ever posted on this board. It is not "hatred" to point out that he is literally breaking his own record for futility, year after year.

He has one championship in 31 opportunities.

[/QUOTEunless.he has some anti aging serum, not gonna happen...it will take mooney 35 more years to catch Jim...and that's if he has mostly 20 win seasons!

Haters are going to hate, no matter what.

Not true. He could go winless November to February and undefeated in March & April, each year. 😁
