Loyola Chicago

Big game for them going on right now against Hovde's USF squad in Salt Lake City. Heavyweight "mid-major" matchup put together on short notice amid all of the cancelations.

Loyola hangs on, 79–74. Tight game most of the way. Loyola opened it up to double digits fairly late, but the Dons came back and made it close...had the ball trying to tie it with a three in the final 30 seconds.

New coach, same story for Loyola...NET was already at 19 and this neutral Q1 win certainly won't hurt that.

They covered the 2.5 right:) All that matters.

Loyola's in trouble at home against a bad Valpo team...down 10 with 8 minutes to go. If it holds, should be a Q4 loss for them, as Valpo would have to jump 55 spots to get up to a Q3.

Loyola was able to claw its way back, and they're headed to OT.

Edit: The Ramblers pull it out in double OT, 81–74. Norris with 23.

And in case anyone is thinking his record might have benefitted from many years in the lower-level SoCon, he's actually been better since they joined the A-10: 150–83 (.644).

And he’s having one of his best seasons ever AFTER losing the equivalent of Burton and Cayo (from a production standpoint) in the offseason, with Grady and the other guard transferring out. How well do we think Mooney would be doing right now had those two guys left us??

McKillop always seems to have someone ready to step up. Every year they seem to lose a good player or two to graduation or now transfers, but then all of a sudden he finds a young recruit to step up or maybe someone who played a complimentary role the year before is ready to step into a more prominent role. He just finds a way to keep them in the post season conversation most years.

Coaching matters.

Their players are often not the most athletic but they are so darn adept at fundamentals that they are outstanding players. They are tough and hard nosed, a reflection of their coach. Unfortunately our team is also a reflection of our coach.

What is interesting is Davidson made the jump to A10 from the Southern conference - considered a big jump in conferences and in the first year - win the A10, and have really been a top level team in the league most years. VCU had a similar path - they came from CAA and in first year and came in 2nd and made the NCAA tourney and have never looked back. We had a similar experience as we made the A10 tourney finals our first year from the CAA to A10 under JB. Made the NIT that year - then 2 years year later in NCAA tourney. But we just have not been able to sustain success like these two programs have and they made similar jumps. VCU has done it by changing coaches every few years. Davidson has done it by maintaining their coach.

Definitely shows that top teams in lower-level conferences can compete well in the A-10. Unfortunately, we lost our momentum when JB left after just a year in the A-10. Jerry was able to ride JB's guys to success for a couple of years, but we could tell it was about to turn ugly.

The hilarious and sobering thing about Davidson is that literally every excuse Mooneyites make as to why things haven't gone our way here could be said about Davidson – and then some. It's smaller than us. More academically difficult than we are. Really overall had less basketball history than we did. Spends less on basketball than we do. Has worse facilities than we do. And doesn't make excuses – just wins, makes it to the semifinals of the A10 tourney EVERY YEAR, makes it to the NCAA or NIT almost every year. Amazing.

Yeah, Loyola obviously had a good run in the '60s and another couple of decent years in the '80s, but outside of that it's been some very lean seasons until the last five years.

Hate to say it but I don’t think any changes are coming any time soon. This is who Ur is and they are perfectly content with that. Big reason why I don’t care nearly as much as I used to.

Is Loyola Chicago joining the A10 to build their resume for a move to the big East? Kind of like Butler and Xavier

You just described what SUCCESS looks like. Have to admire what Davidson has accomplished...way more than us. We have to admit their AD (or plural) & coaching are superior to ours.

Waiting to have someone dispute this.

How much longer is the Davidson Coach going to stick around?

Lefty Driesell was the first coach to lead Davidson to the NCAA Tournament in the 65-66 season. His record at Davidson was 176-65. When Driesell left for Maryland Davidson hired Terry Holland who later became UVA coach. Against us they have won 36 and lost 20. They have appeared in 14 NCAA Tournaments with the last appearance in 2018 and are 8-15 in those games. Richmond has been in 9 NCAA Tournaments with our last appearance in 2011 and an 8-9 record in those games.

He seems to recruit for his system. Interesting concept.
Recent years McKillop has recruited heavily overseas, especially in Europe. Richmond needs to hire Coachfezz full time as our foreign recruiter. He knows what to look for.
Hey, that is a great idea for a new billboard "Hire Coachfezz, he know what to look for".
We can even add in a photo of one of those Romanian cabbage roll thingy's. Wow that just gave me another great idea. Have a "Coachfezz Night" at the RC....everybody gets a free cabbage roll when Richmond misses two free throws!!
Man I'm on a roll.....
