Lineup if we allow Nick Sherod to slide over to the 2

Jacob Gilyard 5'9"
Nick Sherod 6'4"
Noah Yates 6'5"
Souleymane Koureissi 6'8"
Grant Golden 6'10"

We've discussed before the problems with Sherod as 2-guard, but any lineup we have out there is going to have some downside. Last year our lack of height caused significant defensive problems. We only had two outside shooters, and we were young. This lineup adds 9 inches, a third outside shooter in Noah Yates, and is older and has more division 1 playing minutes.

Sal is easily the most sought-out recruit from among those looking for a spotting in our starting lineup. His power 5 offers came early in the recruiting process, indicating he wasn't their back-up plan.

Noah Yates has put up better shooting numbers in division I than anyone else looking for a spot in our starting lineup.
career 3 -- 38/97 = 39%
career 2 -- 24/36 = 67%
overall FG -- 62/133 = 47%
career FT -- 25/34 = 74%

We can bring in another ball handler as the first sub off the bunch.

So what is the verdict on this potential starting lineup? I think the concerns about Nick Sherod's ball handling are small potatoes compared to the positives with this lineup.

I think every lineup is going to potentially have it’s weaknesses. This one has defense and secondary ball handling problems. It’s probably not much different defensively than playing a freshman or playing a 2G that doesn’t shoot/score real well.

I’m fine with the idea.

I think Sherod is more suited for the 2 position than the 4 which he played several times. I’m personally a fan of having height and am hoping for a lineup of

Gilyard
Sherod
Verbinskis
Sal/Cayo
Golden.

I like JJ more coming off the bench. Our biggest problem has been play in the paint and getting rebounds. We have shooters and are pretty athletic but post play and rebounding are two key elements that I think more size can help us improve on

Nick is listed at 6’4, 230. For reference, Grant is 6’10, 260. I think Nick could be a viable 2 if he dropped some weight (might gain some quickness) but I think his body is built more like a 3/4 at this point. Maybe he added that weight to prevent wear and tear, since he was needed down low last year. If so maybe he can trim down a little and be a 2.

Any reason you want to see Verbinskis in the lineup other than height? Just curious if you’ve heard he’s looking improved.

Shouldn’t a “two” be your best three point shooter, a sharpshooter more than a ballhandler. Height doesn’t factor in, although it never hurts to be tall in basketball. A three needs to be a little bigger and more physical, and score inside and out while also being a good rebounder. Sounds like Nick is the “three”!

we may see a lineup like that, but if anyone presses us and gets the ball out of Gilyard's hands we'll be in big trouble. Nick's not a ball handler. neither is Yates.

I get wanting JJ off the bench but right now he's our best option at the 2 unless Wojcik, Schneider or Gustavson prove better.

I really wish Francis was available this year.

My biggest hope is having options this year in different lineups. Have 8-9 players who can actually contribute should give us options on what our best line up dependent on what our opposition is showing. I’m not completely convinced we have that, but I’m optimistic we’re in a better position than last year.

It wasn't just height. I've heard general ramblings - on this board mostly - that he has improved, but I've always liked him as a player based on some of the highlight films I've seen. He didn't get many offers out of high school, but I think he is one of the few examples of that being because Mooney got him early-on, as opposed to other players we've gotten who didn't have D1 offers because of talent discrepancy. Also, thinking about the alternatives, JJ seems like the obvious choice but I like him more as a 6th man. He adds more of an energy that way. I don't think Schneider is a starter quite yet, and he'll likely be back-up PG. Wojcik may take over the starting role, but Verbinskis has a year under his belt on understanding the system better.

I agree, and it does not really matter what we want to call Nick. 2, 3, or whatever, it will not change what his role will be, and will not change the fact that we will want and need a lot of scoring from him. I think he, along with Jacob and Grant, will get a lot of minutes, and, as you said, it would be great if they can get these minutes with several other lineup options out there with them.

agreed it doesn't affect Nick. he's playing 30+ mpg along with Golden and Gilyard. it affects the other openings. it's about whether or not we can play with just one true ball handler on the floor. many teams do ... but we haven't. if we can then we have more options. if we can't then either JJ, Schneider, Wojcik or Gustovson is our starting 2 guard.

Mr Sherod

I challenge you to be in the best shape you have been for this next season. Can you beat this challenge, can you go to this next level?
How much do you WANT??

Strange that Mooney didn’t mention Bryce or Tomas tonight. Didn’t mention the Finn not being here until fall either.

Coach Fezz, I thought Nick looked as big and buff as I have seen him tonight. He will be ready.

only saw in the RTD article CM say the redshirted guys have an advantage being here a year, but Sal is really good, Wojcik has a college ready body, and Yates is tough, a great athlete, and a great shooter.
did he talk about the others and the RTD left them out?

Agree with this. Nick has translated that offensive ability that made him the all time VA hs scorer to the college level. He showed last year that he can score with the best of them. Now, you may not be able to be the quickest or jump the highest, but you can certainly improve strength, conditioning and athletic ability. If he has done this in the offseason, could be in for a huge year. I did notice him bending over and grabbing the shorts a lot last year. He can be special if he takes his strength and conditioning to the next level.
