The quality of play for young teams improves over time as they get more experience and playing time. We saw this last year when we had an absolutely terrible OOC record, but finished a respectable 5th place in the A10. I think we would have been a very strong team if all 5 starters had returned from last year.

This year’s team has many talented players and we have seen the team play much better over the past 6 games, despite super star Gilyard not being at 100% and Sherod not available. The team played extremely well and won by large margins against Wake Forest, Coppin State and High Point. We also played well and were only a couple baskets down with less than a minute to go in loses to Georgetown and ODU. With a healthy Gilyard we might have won both. The only disaster was against Oral Roberts.

This team is going to continue to improve and with a healthy Gilyard could be very competitive in the A10.

Good points. Unfortunately it will be hard to change the perception the Richmond is really bad, after 3 horrible loses to 3 horrible teams AT HOME in front of our most loyal fans.

WF - Only fair but far from a good team. Coppin State & High Point - both weak teams and should be a given that we should beat them.

GTown - Decent but not great. A winnable game but we didn't. ODU - The best of the 5 you mentioned. Another winnable game, but we have difficulty down the stretch (similar to us not closing out Wyoming).

Jury is out. Conference play will tell us where we are & how much improvement is occurring.

Experience will make the new Freshmen better. I don't think we be any better had Fore or Buck stayed. Both were as good as they were going to get and they were 12/20. I would not say I'm glad Sherod got hurt but the bright lining was the fact CM will have a chance to develop a bench, will he?

Wasn't yesterday a great chance for others to play against a clearly inferior team. Jake really had to play almost the whole game??

I expect we are getting better but I expect the teams we are scheduled to face are improving as well. I’m mostly looking at the remainder of this season for two things, 1) knowing that the only thing we are playing for in conference is playoff seeding, does CM develop the bench further, particularly Andre and Sal, and 2) do we seem ready to win several games in the A10 tournament.

Our Kenpom ranking is currently 191. I think we played like a 300 ranked team our 1st 7 games where we were 2-5. Over our last 6 games we are 3-3 and played better than forecast by this forum in 5 of those 6 games. We have been playing like a 130 ranked team over the past 6 games, which is a big improvement and we continue to get better.

Wow, 130 is tournament worthy. Maybe we can break a hundred by March.

If I’m reading it correctly our Kenpom sos is around 338 so it’s hard to take anything meaningful away from any wins in this stretch. I think 9-9 in a10 would be plausible but don’t expect a ceiling much higher.

yes we had our best win WF and our worst loss ORU at home, in those last 6 games? And even though the A10 is looking more and more like the CAA, it's So Ala and then the easy part of our schedule is over.

Conference play wont tell us anything... the league is dreadful. If we finish .500 it will tell us further how much we suck.

Disagree. That ranking system is crazy having us at 191. We lost to Longwood and Oral freaking Roberts at home. The 5 wins we have are a joke. Wake is terrible.

Don't forget about Hampton, which is worse than both of them and destroyed us at home.

Actually I think conference play may tell us a few things as follows:
  • Will conference play be a continuation of OOC play?
  • Will we be competitive (.500), or will be be in the bottom third of conference?
  • Watching the games will give us an idea of how good or bad the conference is. I think we kind of have to view our schedule & the conference as a fresh start once league play begins in January.
Certainly not expecting Mooney to make any meaningful adjustments because this many years of him has shown us that's just not going to happen.
