Johnson's Our Man

Know this was high school, but check this out. A three star recruit, Kevin was offered by a number of schools including Georgia Tech. OSC

Thanks Ulla, that is an encouraging film. I think it is the right choice to "burn a shirt for the playoffs, our seniors deserve it and for their efforts. I also want to thank KJ if he was given an option and said yes!

I assume this was totally KJ's decision, no peer pressure, etc. and I hope it was the right one. We won't know for a while......may be never. Good luck KJ, I'll be screaming for you.

Rocco just said on pregame that Johnson came in to his office Monday morning and said he wanted to lead the team into the playoffs and he felt like he gave the team the best chance in the playoffs, Rocco agreed that their chances were best with him but told him to sleep on it and talk to his dad ( who is a longtime HS coach and played at South Carolina). On Tuesday he came in and said again he wanted to lead the team into the playoffs. Rocco asked, "What did your dad say?" Johnson said, " He said 'You will regret it if you don't play this weekend.'"So Rocco agreed to burn the redshirt. Gotta love the kids attitude.

With 18 players out due to injury, it was a Selfish & Stupid decision by Rocco in my opinion, win or lose. Of course a 19 year old will say he will play. He won't play next year and will only have one year left after Lauletta.

If he doesn't play next year (redshirt), why will he only have one year left?

Does one have to be a freshman or sophomore to redshirt?

^Pretty sure it can be any year that you don't play. Rarely see it for upperclassmen outside of injury, but you can do it

Anything can happen in the playoffs. Give your team its best chance to win. KJ is certainly doing that

If it's what he wanted to do then it was a good decision. No one made him. He asked. Coach said to think it over. He did and made his choice.

Now it's up to the teammates he stood up for to make sure it was worth his while and make a deep run!!

It was the right decision. All hands on deck when you make the playoffs. We didn't have another QB we could trust to throw the ball. Survive and advance.
I got attacked for having an opinion. I think we can all have our opinion and express it. :)

Thanks Kevin Johnson for stepping up. We support you and this team. Keep the dream alive!
Just an absolutely phenomenal game by Johnson. To come into a playoff game under these circumstances and perform as well as he did is just amazing. Congratulations to the whole team and kudos to whoever decided to play to win with an open it up offense instead of playing not to lose as often happens in cases like this.
Just a great, great game and I hope they can keep it going next week.

E told me he was poised in highschool and would be up to the challenge. He surpassed all expectations. The whole team did well. Have to give my other homeboy Charles Mack some love 2.

KJ reminded me of a Eric Ward with his play and performance.

He can redshirt next season and will still have two years left. No real difference if he sits out this year as a RS and is a backup in 17, or if he plays now and sits out 17 as a RS. And he probably will get more playing time this year by coming out of RS than he would next season as a backup.

Ironically,if KJ had played after KL went down at W&M we would likely have had a W last weekend and bye this weekend with hosting a game next weekend.Things happen for a reason.

Yeah he needed to come into this game and not against an opponent that was off a win. Tell what we in a good bracket and spot right now.

Spiderk the more you speak the more we all know how unhappy you really are! Sad!

Great all-around game today. Amazing presence by KJ. And for anyone who questions the move, there's never a guarantee you're in the playoffs from 1 season to the next -- so who wouldn't want to be at the helm of this team. Go Spiders!

Any athlete knows you play for a team, and you play when your team needs you. You never know when you will get injured in practice, in a game, etc. You never know when someone will come in a be a better option for the team. Good decision by Coach, Kevin, and his family.

Time will tell if it was a good decision. We won't really know, or he won't know until his time at Richmond is over and he has the benefit of hindsight. I do believe it was the right decision because it was his and his family's decision. His father played at South Carolina and is a long time HS coach. Their decision was theirs to make and they made it. I believe Rocco would have respected either decision. Everything I know about Rocco is that if anything, he is a man of integrity and a straight shooter. I believe he had every intention of honoring his promise to keep Johnson's redshirt this year.
Then Monday morning he had a 19 year old come to his office and tell him something that I'm sure he was excited to hear. Rocco, in his wisdom, told him to take 24 hours and talk with his family. After 24 hours Johnson confirmed his decision. At that point Rocco rolled with it. He acted as he should have, but ultimately it was Johnson's decision (with his family's guidance) to make.

SpiderK you are so negative and out of touch you make me sick. Get a life and stop being so negative. Go Spiders and go Kevin Johnson. Thanks for being a team player. We support you and the Spiders.

I don't agree with what K said either, but I respect his right to express his opinion. What I don't understand is why you think it is your obligation to trash everyone who has an opinion that is different from yours.

And you just trashed someone who has a different opinion than yours. Do you pay attention to this board. Spider K likes to make childish comments about our players and our program. Nothing about the game, or strategy, or recruiting.

This is far better experience for KJ than holding a clipboard and garbage time in 2017.

They can use Clise and Mancuso as backups next year, and KJ would still have eligibility in '18 and '19. Of course Mancuso would want to compete.

We have eight QBs on the roster. There aren't enough redshirt years, or years in general, to make it work it for all of them. KJ now has a playoff win under his belt - something only a few of them are likely to get. It was a great decision by him and by Rocco.

This is one of those decisions that really benefits all parties. KJ gets the chance to show what he can do and has an opportunity to lead us in the playoffs. Like many have said, he can just redshirt next year and have 2 full years left and an opportunity to compete for the starting job. The coaches and the team benefit from having a quality QB on the field who gives us the opportunity to advance in the playoffs. With KJ in there, we can run our offense and get the ball down the field to the outstanding receivers. Everyone wins.

I reread my post. Exactly what in there is trashing jpo?
I guess now you'll accuse me of trashing you...
BTW I wasn't agreeing with SpiderK' s comments, I only respect his right to an opinion. Just like I respect your right to your opinions, most of which I happen to agree with (except this one of course)

Or he can lead us to the NC and create a QB controversy next year
