Coaching carousel heating up.

Very interesting thing I saw on the coaching changes twitter, they claimed John Beilein was a finalist or trying to get the FGCU job. I find that hard to believe, unless his wife just wants to move to Florida :)

I am surprised by Christian firing. Thought they would give him another year - especially since they have everyone coming back and I think next year they have a shot to be in top 5 of A10 if the can learn to play just a little defense.

This only pushes UR to keep Mooney and go with consistency.

Even more reason for the administration to lock Mooney up long term. Likey give him an extension that keeps him under contract for 5-6 years at this point.

First name in the mix is one people here have thought we should look at if we needed a coach...

Agreed Spiderman - he doesn't take or consider this job unless LaSalle is really gonna pay him top dollar. If I were Langel - I am only considering it if they give me 5 years fully guaranteed at 1.5 million per year. But I don't see LaSalle paying that amount and not sure how much time Howard had left on his deal they still have to pay him.

Yeah, he really should be aiming higher, but no idea if the interest is out there. Langel was making about $360K before his 2019 extension through 2027.

Howard was only making like $550K.

Army and Navy are the toughest basketball jobs in the Patriot League, because of height restrictions.
I don't think that's an issue. max allowable height without a waiver is 6'8". not a lot of PL big men are bigger than that anyway. plus they grant waivers for taller guys if they can pass the physical tests.

Maybe. I should have added the service academy lifestyle does not appeal to many, many, many prospective recruits, not to mention the ensuing 5-year military commitment.

Pretty much everybody in the Patriot League has strong academics so the service academy's high entrance standards are not an issue.

Although he was only 6'6" when he enrolled.
Was he? I always thought the height limit was measured at the time of LOI not at enrollment.

So I always thought the service academies tried to get players after their Junior year to get an extra year of growth...

I'm not one to boot members out of the conference, but La Salle has to go. I can tolerate Fordham and Duquense, but a 2nd Philly school that has historically been an anchor in the conference since their admission needs to have a come to jesus moment and head to the MAAC or wherever.

Just a reminder that La Salle has made the Sweet 16 more recently than we have! And until 8 days ago had made the tournament more recently than we had

And they’ve been in the conference longer than we have.

Are you implying from that one stat alone UR should be booted out too? If that's the case. I don't get your point other than cherry picking an outlier statistic to go against my argument.

Since that year (La Salle NCAA season included) La Salle was also 138-169 (4-9 vs UR) while UR was 184-141 with as many NCAAs and 3 NITs during that time frame.

If you want to include the whole history of both teams in the A10 La Salle is 355-459 (Joined in 1995-96) with 1 NCAA and NIT appearance and 0 regular season or tournament championships/appearances. UR who joined a full 6 seasons later is 383-300 (2001-02) 4 NCAAS (Possibly 5) and 5 NITS 4 A10 championship appearances with 2 titles. Overall since joining the A10 UR is 20-11 vs. La Salle.

La Salle has posted an overall A10 record of 172-275 while UR has a 192-152 record in 6 less seasons. Richmond has had 5 losing record seasons in the A10, La Salle has 5 in a row and was never above .500 in conference after their S16 appearance. Generally speaking losing to La Salle is a RPI/Net anchor for any team in the conference.

This is of course not just a basketball thing with regards to expansion. Commitment to facilities, successes in other sports also play a role. La Salle adds virtually nothing of value historically and endowment is in the toilet with no major facility upgrades in the work. They dropped 7 sports recently as well. Bottom line, they have been an anchor on this conference for 24 of the 26 seasons they have been in the A10. If they were the lone team in Philly I could tolerate it more.

Have we underperformed at times over the past decade? Absolutely. Do you think the A10 would be happy if we left tomorrow especially if the choice is between us or La Salle? C'mon Ply. The A10 would waive La Salles exit fee if it meant them leaving.

I still find it fascinating that we omit 2 seasons ago as if it never happened, but include that season as a missed NCAA season or failure of a season when admitting to our shortcomings.

David was a great guy also, recall one CAA tourney we and Navy were staying in the same hotel. Went to b'fast number of Navy players there, I was reading the paper and all but one Navy player left (David Robinson). I walked over and told him it was a pleasure watching him play for years. He thanked me and asked me to join him, we sat and talked like 2 old friends for about 30 minutes. Great guy!!!

Love David Robinson. He was one of the few players I appreciated that played on a team I didn’t really follow (Olajuwon was the other). I still have the Sweet 16 matchup with Cleveland State on VHS somewhere.

Can definitely go with that sentiment.................driving to the Robins Center before a Navy - Richmond game with my then young son and we saw the Navy bus. My son said Dad get me David Robinson's autograph. We were able to get to the parking lot before the bus and my son and I waited for the Middies to disembark. As David got off the bus I told him how much my son liked the way he played and wanted his autograph. He said - Yes sir and asked my son how he was doing and signed the paper my son offered. Naturally admired him even more after that!

Good stuff Fan1, that is exactly how I would picture him based on interviews over the years.
He was a Naval Officer, what else would we expect. While not quite an Admiral, he was a Lieutenant JG.

Yes - was called The Admiral on the basketball court but not while serving as a Civil Engineering Officer at Kingsbay Naval Submarine Base.........................credit to him for following in his dad's footsteps and serving in the Navy!

Getting back to the topic of La Salle, they have been working on a new or updated arena plan. Timing is starting to get tight, as they received a bequest in 2013 (right after their Sweet Sixteen run) that's now worth $6.5 million, but it's contingent upon them starting construction by the end of 2023.

Wasn't their entire university about to go underwater a year or two ago? Feels like a new arena is probably the least of their concerns.

La Salle undergrad enrollment:

2012: 4500
2019: 3900
2021: 3300

Their endowment is only $80 million. They are not in good shape.
