Jalen Seegars - 2017 Offer

Thanks for the link, above. For those who may not want to take the time to scroll through the link, the offers so far were from: Vermont, Monmouth, Winthrop, Hampton, and High Point. High-point is perhaps best known for the fact that their President earns one of the top salaries for University Presidents, nationally, coming in at around 3.5 million. Enough said.

Based on the offers he had received so far, and the fact that we appear pretty deep at the 2-G position, I was going to suggest that this guy may not be a high-priority. However, if you see his video you have to come away very impressed by his athleticism, his shot and some of his ball-handling. Depending on how many spots we have available, Jalen looks like he plays "big enough" for either a 2-G or a SF, and is a guy who could be very fun to watch!

Still looking at Jalen apparently, but we don't need more guards!

Perhaps we need more guards if we know we're not getting any of the bigs we've been chasing...

Might point out that Jalen at this point is 6'5", 220 pounds, yes 220 pounds in high school, and can jump out of the gym! Not your typical UR guard! Let's get him! OSC

Ulla, when do you find time to personally weigh & measure each recruit?

Just kidding!

Just a reminder, we will have 2 big men on roster (one of whom is perpetually injured) on roster after this year. This kid might be a player but we have a ton of players just like him and huge needs for big men.

He seems to know Moorman. Could be we were checking in with both of them. How far is it from High Point to Greensboro? 18 miles?

I see Seegars listed at 6'5" 225. I love Moorman, who's 6'6". I'm not going to freak out about an inch. he's a big strong kid who gets his hand to the top of the box. he'd be a big forward here, since we have so many at the 2 and 3.

to paraphrase coach Tarrant, it would be great if he was 6'8" ... but then he'd probably go higher.

spiderman, good points. It's how big you play that matters and Jalen plays big! He also seems to be quick which would help with defense. Would love to have him. OSC

I'm not CM so my opinion means nothing, but based on rankings and offers Moorman's on a different level. I wait on Moorman and Johnson. but Seegars looks like he would contribute.

6'5 guys can't play the 4 or 5 in the Atlantic 10. We would get abused defensively, if we had a 6'5 guy trying to guard another A-10 teams power forward.

agreed that 6'5 is not ideal at the 4. especially if we're playing man. better if we're playing our matchup zone, but still not ideal. we want players though. and mismatches work both ways.

at least he seems strong and should be able to bang/rebound. he'd compete with Solly at the 4. just Solly, as far as I can see. we're getting a bit short after this current senior class graduates. will need big Bryce to come in and balance things out a little.

He is listed as 6'5 (which means he is probably 6'3) and listed as a shooting guard, who is being recruited by several lesser mid majors. Why we are evening having a conversation about him playing a power forward in the A-10 is beyond me. Just because he can "jump high" and "seems strong" does not mean he can guard a 6'8 A-10 forward on the blocks.

Contrast this to Moorman who is listed at 6'7 and as a forward. Moorman is also being recruited by big schools and has a body type to play an interior position.

And I'm not saying I don't like this kids game. I like it a lot but we have 5-6 guys like this already on our roster and meanwhile, we have 2 big men on the roster after this year.

Now maybe Solly can play the 4, but I don't see how we can count of Paul right now, he is always hurt and even when he wasn't hurt last year, Mooney didn't give him any minutes.

Even if all 3 work out and can play, you still need more than 3 guys on roster who can play the 4 and 5. Injuries happen, big men take time to develop. We need a big man in this year's class. We can't afford to wait for "Bryce" who given his offers is at best a 50-50 proposition at this time.

FWIW Rivals has him listed as a small forward, not a shooting guard. Although it would not surprise me if he is listed as a shooting guard on other sites.

JP is also listed as a shooting guard on some sites. Point being a team with a lot of 6'6" skilled and athletic guys can play with most other teams. OSC

I'm not disagreeing that we need more size, 97. pretty much everyone we've been after lately is 6'7"-ish. Moorman and Johnson are still in play. I'm not giving up on them. I'm just saying I get it if CM thinks Seegars is substantially better than other 6'7" guys that we're looking at after Moorman and Johnson.

Rivals has Moorman at 6'6" 209. They have Seegars at 6'5" 220. If we think Moorman can play the 4, then it's not a stretch that Seegars can too. Yes, it depends on if he's really 6'5". he does look a lot bigger than the other guys on the floor, but maybe they're small. Maybe that's why CM visited, to stand next to him.

I don't care that he calls himself a SG. I hope he has SG skills. for us, we'll need him at a forward spot.

VCU's most common lineup last year had Burgess at the 4, and he is 6'5. Most of the time VCU had no players over 6'7 on the court. Davidson also used Barham as a 4, and he is only 6'5 (though Aldridge was at the 4 most of the time). Those team were both pretty successful.

La Salle plays 6'5 Price at the 4, but they are horrible. St. Louis' 4 was also only 6'5, but they were also horrible.

That said, I think we do need some bigger guys. If we can't get a quality big man then it might be more beneficial to get a talented/strong 6'5 player.

I am in agreement with Spiderman here, I think this is a guy that can compete on the interior in the A10. From the video clip, he is a big, athletic, strong guy who will be able to compete. Agree with 97 and all that we need some legit 6'8" guys that can play, but those seem to be committing everywhere but UR. Hopefully we can nab a guy like that, but I'd rather get a guy like this than a 6'9" stiff for sure. I feel like for next year Solly is a wing, but has enough size and athleticism to be a stretch four and rebound and guard on the interior. It does seem like the last 5 years or more, with Amaker at Harvard, Jones at Yale and other competitive programs in the Ivy, that league has been skimming just enough of those guys to impact our recruiting.

In an article about the Brooklyn Nets, the writer stated, "Fortunately, the NBA is moving toward a positionless, label-less brand of basketball". It has been mentioned before that Coach said that a team of skilled and athletic 6'6" guys would be ideal. Then switching on defense would not be an issue and on offense everyone out there would be a threat. But then what to do if you come up against 6'10"-7' skilled and athletic players like Kevin Durant? The answer is there are only a handful of those guys around and they don't play in the A10. Sure, I would love to have a KD clone as a Spider but they are few and far between, so I am extremely happy to have TJ who while excellent on offense can be a defensive liability against quicker more athletic players (like the guys we have been recruiting!). Hopefully we can get another comittment this year from a 6'5"-6'6" or taller guy, but don't sacrifice skill and athleticism for height alone. OSC

Yeah, but Mo was 6'6", 260 when he showed up on campus.
SF, not be to stickler, but vdu only this past year began listing Mo as 6'6", likely to help his basketball/football tecruiting appeal. Mo was 6'5" coming out of high school and 240 pounds (see link). Look I am with you and some others, JP and Chase would be great, but, hey, Jalen IMHO would also be quite a catch (#9 ranked player in NC). OSC

Hi, I'm Bonzie Colson, a 6'5" power forward in the ACC. I put up 31 and 11 in Cameron Indoor last year. Productive front-court guys come in all shapes and sizes.

Thanks, DukeDenver. SF, there you have it! OSC

From the Greensboro newspaper, Jalen made all area team in NC along with Harry Giles and others; here is an excerpt: OSC

F JALEN SEEGARS, 6-4, 200, junior, Page

  • Long, athletic swingman who can do damage from the wing or crashing the offensive boards
  • Averaged 17.7 points, 7.9 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.4 blocks per game
  • Helped lead Pirates to Metro 4-A championship and NCHSAA Class 4-A West Regional semifinals

better have grown from 6'4" 200. great player or not, we need a little bigger than that right now.

Bonzie Coleman had 8 BCS offers, Seegers has 4 mid-major offers from the likes of Winthrop and High Point. So while they are the same height, it appears Coleman's potential was just a bit higher coming out of high school than is Seegers.

By the way, VCU just landed a 4 star 6'9 forward with several BCS offers. Be nice to have someone to D him up on our end. Don't think a 6'4 guy is going to cut it.
