As the season comes to a close - wonder what the thought is now heading into the home stretch and A10 tourney. Do you think this season has been a success? It is March and UR is right on the bubble. Which means - we got a shot at the tourney. Does that alone mean it has been successful coming off two terrible seasons? Or is it NCAA bracket or bust for you?

I voted yes solely because there was a vote on this board where the majority said 14-19 wins and some even said fewer than that. Reaching 22+ wins just based on that poll means this season is a success compared to what was expected. Now those expectations have risen but solely based on preseason 100% yes this season has been a success to 65% of the voters there.

It depends on the context, I think. Following two terrible seasons, yes it's a success. But should we have had two terrible seasons in a row? No. So in that regard, this should have been about expected at this point with our core group of players, so in that case it's not a success yet.

In terms of the "greatest class ever" discussion, no, it's not a success until we make the tourney.

Big-time success. We are talking about this season. Not past seasons. I would think any Spider fan would take this season every year. We have been talking about an at-large and being in contention for an at-large pretty much the whole season. To say successful only means dancing, means you're letting committee members decide whether the season was successful or not, instead of our amazing play that has led to a 22-7 season with a ton great moments so far.

the question wasn't about Mooney or the past 8 years. of course this season has been a success. I wonder if some here can even enjoy a season. some just enjoy a week in March once in a while.

Had Moondog, danced a couple times in the past 8 years, I might see this argument. He hasn't though, so I can't look at the season in a vacuum. We need an NCAA bid, not just for the fans but for our program to be healthy and relevant again.

Beating expectations and "success" don't necessarily mean the same thing.

I'm pleased with the progress, but I don't consider it a full-fledged success unless we're dancing.

I can’t argue with you here because it simply comes down to the interpretation of what success is. Like if the #1 pick in the nba makes a couple all star games but that’s it you would say that’s a pretty successful career BUT being the #1 pick you’d expect better than that so the career may not be a success. Not a perfect comparison but just the first thing that came to my mind

Maybe you should read Trap's question again. :)

For the best class ever, the season is a success if it includes a win in the NCAA tournament.

I agree with a few of my fellow Spiders that if you talk about a successful season, yes I guys have played their hearts out so far. Enjoy what they have accomplished after two 20 loss seasons. The team has learned a lot as they should. They deserve to dance based on what they have done so far!!

I don't think bradford was out of our hands but yea If we don't get in with that something is wrong

If we don't get in having run the table all the way to the A-10 tourney final, I'd question whether the (admittedly bad) Radford loss would have changed anything.

The Radford loss is what is keeping us from being a lock right now. We would be 10 spots higher in NET.

This question is best answered by attendance at games and fan involvement, which have been overwhelmingly positive the last 6 games. I f we do not make the NCAA it would be a disappointment, but I think we would have sell-out screaming crowds at the Robins Center for NIT games. This is one of the best teams the school has ever had if you consider they are all coming back and has been great fun to watch! Go Spiders!

BTW, I expect season ticket sales to be up big next year.

Sorry sell out crowds at NIT games are a rarity anywhere. You are fooling yourself if you think we’d have sell out screaming crowds.

Maybe if we go to quarters with msg on line with a high profile opponent.

Moot point as we HAVE to go to NCAA with this team. And I expect we will.

NCAA or bust.

We are going to the dance. You heard it here first.

The student section of the NIT game vs. Miami filled up faster than any of our VCU games my 4 years (or any other home game we ever had for my 4 years). Got there 90 minutes early as we typically did and we were about 5 rows from the top as that was the best available

Yes but as I mentioned that was quarterfinals against an ACC team with MSG on line. It was a great student turnout. But it was not a sell out.

We had a better turnout against Syracuse overall including students back in Beilein's last year. I was at that game, if it wasn't a sell out it was close and that was with much larger capacity. But that was also quarters against name opponent.

The early round NIT games are quite tough for attendance historically anywhere and that definitely includes us. Not much notice, and usually a non major opponent. No way those would be anywhere close to a sell out.

Not a shot just reality. Plus we would be coming off a letdown of not making the NCAA to boot.

But hey we know where we're going to be. Tampa, Albany, Cleveland, or Greensboro hopefully. Eh maybe even Dayton. Let's go Spiders.

That year we were also coming off a letdown of not making the tournament. We were a 1 seed which meant first four out. It may not have been a sell out but I’d actually want data to back that up because a few of my roommates were unable to get student tickets and were turned away at the door because no “regular” tickets were available (this was never a problem except for when VCU came to town). But even if it wasn’t a sellout All I wanted to point out was that in 4 years and probably around 75-80 Spiders games that was, by far, the biggest student turnout.

6,126 was the official attendance.

2nd place in the A10 is a success, however I agree with a number of posters because of Mooney’s very weak performance over the years, it is certainly not an unqualified success. An NCAA bid is a must to be a complete success.

The unbalanced schedule really worked in our favor this year, so even the 2nd place is a little tainted.

From where we stood the last few years, why can't we just smell the roses and be shall in the success of the team. Many of you here thought that we would be lucky to have a 17 or 19 why season at best, now we are approaching 24 wins with a single digit loss at the end of the year. Successful year.

Tainted? Keep trying. Coach will be back next year. Get used to it.

why can't you stop being so positive. The role of this string is keep blasting the team and coach.

Yes it’s a function of an unbalanced schedule....we didn’t have Dayton, RI, St. Bonny, Duq, or stL (1st, 3rd,,4th, 5th, or 6th ) place teams Twice. Not anyone’s fault but may be looked at in NCAA consideration. I know he’s back next year no matter what but the record is the record.
