Is the Big10 bad at defense?

"They're just physical, and they brought a lot of guys any time I was driving to the basket or in the paint area, so it was really nothing new to me," Murray said. "But I was able to find a lot of guys in kickouts and things like that. I really feel like I didn't have to score as much this game”

Threw the rest of his team under the bus. He said they missed a lot of open shots he provided.

I watched the entire interview and can understand how would interpret the quote that way without context. In actuality, he said a few times that the team as a whole didn’t make shots they were normally making all season.
In addition, I really like how he talked about next year and working hard to get better as a team, which is particularly cool since we all know he’s a lottery pick. Definitely a testament to the program that their star player gives them enough respect to not just immediately start thinking about the NBA.

How did our mediocre defense hold the might Hawkeyes to 21 points under their average?

Good observation @fan2011 and I would say they are not up to par say last 4-5 seasons. Ironic but going over my bracket Wed of course went to Kenny for some stats. After looking at the defensive numbers I thought maybe overvaluing the Big Ten teams in what they could do in the tourney.

Saw physical as they come Izzo's MichSt ranked #58 for Adj. Defense Efficiency. Purdue stood at #91. We knew how much Painter values defense. Indiana led BigTen at #21 dropping a few spots after that St Mary's debacle. Next ranked Big Ten team is #32.

Consider MichSt over last 5 previously years averaged #21 while Purdue came in #27. Now look at how the Big 12 stands. Easy first round winners teams Kansas is #24 ADE, Baylor #12 and Texas Tech #1. Other Big 12 tourney teams include Texas #13, TCU #23 and Iowa St #10.

Now look at what just occurred with Texas taking control in the second half over VTech. Hokies FGA are 41% 3PTA. Today only 25% with only 2-5 first half. Even game at HT and thought for sure VTech would adjust and get off more in second half. Never happened and were stuck at 2-8 for too long and finished 4-12. Texas coach Chris Beard we know is a D genius.

I anxious to see how Iowa St does against slight fav LSU about to tip off and TCU later in even matchup with Seton Hall. I was surprised Iowa St make the tourney. Were 20-12 but only 7-11 in conference play. Good they played the #328 ranked OOC. Does anyone know what worst conference record is for a P5/6 school that made the dance.

Indiana was 9-11 in the Big 10. Indiana beat Wyoming in the play-in round - Wyoming played its worst game of the year - and then was absolutely destroyed by St. Mary's. Dayton would have been a much better choice. The P5 schools get the benefit of the doubt the Daytons of the world can only dream about.
