I don't take much from a scrimmage against a Div3 school.

I will get more input after the Longwood game.

Agree 06. The good: we did take care of business and win by a large margin. Much better than struggling. I only saw the highlights, but HSC met my expectation as a 6 win D3 team, looked small and nonathletic. Good for a walk through/ dry run, but did not provide much resistance. Maybe VT and others are right, we played one very very good team, and then one lower level to get some confidence. Again, only seeing the highlights, I liked the look of Gustavson alot. Big guard, seemed to move well. Sounds like he has been sick and coming off a late arrival, may have upside to improve quite a bit in next few weeks.
Concerns still - size/athleticism on the front line. Other posters seem to note that while Sal looks like an outstanding prospect, is he up to the task of competing at the A10 level this year?
Defense? While I do understand the argument that Fore and Buck may have held us back scoring from range, I do worry about the defensive end. That was the thing that was so striking, was how easily teams scored on us at the beginning of last year. How do we improve this.

I did really like the look of Woj's court presence, and being shot ready on the catch. He does look like he can contribute on the offensive end early. Again, how does he fare vs the more athletic guards?

Question, how did Nick look? Was he looking to be aggressive from the start?

One other question, what position will Yates play? I see him as a wing, essentially Nick's position. Obviously if we are counting on Yates as a big contributor, it will need to be more as a big guard, or a smaller PF. Do we know the plan. I think he is the X factor this year.

yeah, wish Yates was healthy so we'd see how he'd be used. he's small for big forward in the A10 but maybe he gets first shot at that role behind until Sal and Tomas are ready. Interesting that JJ came in for Nick at the 3. if JJ's a forward, maybe Noah will play some 2. I think the 2 guard spots can be manned effectively with a rotation of Gilyard, Woj and Andre, though.

Mooney tried JJ Johnson at forward with Woj & Gilyard several times during the exhibition. I didn't see were it was effective, BUT, you could tell that he is looking at that lineup due to the number of times that he went to it.

JJ is not a guard. Never saw him as a guard, was concerned when some labeled him as our starting 2 guard. He doesn't have the handle, shooting ability, foot speed, or passing to be a guard. He is an undersized forward. His natural position would be to back up Sherod. Let us hope that is where he ends up.

JJ was considered a 2G coming out of high school. So were/are Nick, Nathan, and Tomas. The two guys on our roster who were technically small forwards in high school are not considered by most here to project at those spots; BryceS has been slated by folks at SG and Sal at F/PF.

I suspect it's the genericization of our lineup at work.

Was hoping Verbinskis was going to backup Sherod. JJ doesn’t seem to fit anywhere very well, although he can knock down the occasional three, pass ok, and is active defensively, although Bryce looks to be as good or better with a couple more inches. Hopefully both will fill a role!

Agreed.

I believe that if JJ is willing to be a "team-first" guy he will add value and will likely see most of his minutes at SF, backing up Nick. JJ adds some positive toughness, heart, and energy, including defensive energy, so I hope we will find a role that optimizes some of his skills. I also see JJ as having a far superior outside shot than Bryce, but most posters have not seen Bryce take a single outside shot (except for FT's last Saturday) so this may be surprising to some.

JJ should get solid back-up minutes at SF, pending Noah's development. Dre (Andre) is a far better fit at 2-G, backing up Woj, so JJ's most likely role will be at SF, playing an "enforcer" role.

OK, now we have three threads about "Hampton Sydney."

Is it:
  1. A running joke?
  2. Auto-correct run amok?
  3. A legit, coincidental error - multiple posters don't know what the school is called?
  4. We actually scrimmaged a mysterious Merchant Marine academy for exchange students between the Tidewater area and Australia?
