It still NCSt vs UCLA 1974, but No matter who wins Gonzaga v
UCLA is going to be right there

unbelievably fun game to watch. Also why is Skip Bayless such a wet blanket.

Bayless must be a UCLA fan....15 ties 19 lead changes biggest lead for either team 7. Both teams shot over 55%. 5 zags and 4 Bruins get double digit points. 20+ assist for each team and some of the best I’ve ever seen. Two evenly matched teams. How could it end better.

oh and by the way both Few and Suggs said they practice long end of game shots?

Back in the day, so did I.
Good news, I used to make 25% from 45 feet.
Bad news, I used to make 25% on layups and free throws...

Fantastic game last night Zags vs UCLA. One of the best I've seen in years. Moon should take notes of what aggressiveness on the court can actually yield. Looks like Zags emulated our poor foul shooting vs Miss St. No doubt they watched our game :pThey shot 60 pct, and that doesn't factor into account back end of 1 & 1's that don't show up in box score. Better foul shooting, and they would would have avoided overtime. Great game from 2 hard playing teams!

Gonzaga as a small private school (5k undergrads) has long proven it is possible to be on the scene in basketball.

Baylor is gonna win the whole thing.
Hard to say. They certainly dominated last night, but Houston didn't have the game that UCLA did. Each game stands on its own, and the dynamics shift day to day & game to game. We have the best two teams throughout the season matched up on Monday. This is the best in what college basketball offers.

It's taken a perfect storm to make Gonzaga.

It has no football program to compete with for athletic department resources. It's the only D1 school in an isolated metro area, so it has the total attention of the community. It has no pro competition. It plays in a relatively weak league. The other in-state D1 programs (Washington, WSU, Eastern Washington, Seattle U) have not been consistently good. It found a great coach, who - unlike 99.9% of coaches in a similar situation - did not leave GU for the first big-money P5 job and thus disrupt the continuity of the program.

Few has done a wonderful job that no other non-P6 program has been able to match, or may ever be able to match. Even schools from a P6 league, like Butler, Xavier, Georgetown, Villanova, Carolina, Duke, Virginia, Kentucky, UCLA, Michigan State, Michigan etc., have had ups and downs during the 20+ years GU has been a force. Kansas might be the only program to match GU's success over the past 20 years and they've done some shady things to manage that.

I’d say what Villanova has done is better than Gonzaga. They have won the big east just about every year over the last 10 years, which is a better league than the WCC by far and they also have won 2 national titles over the last decade. That being said though Mark Few is an unbelievable coach and Gonzaga this year is maybe the best offensive team I’ve ever seen.

Maybe the last 10 but not over a 20-year span, which was the criteria. And Villanova has been a national name in basketball for generations, the program wasn't built from essentially nothing, like Gonzaga's.

Upon reflection, we had a chance to become GU East in the 1990s had Beilein stayed. We had already built an excellent program under Tarrant, had a great facility, and resources were never going to be a problem. Beilein left; Few stayed and built a powerhouse.

Another Mooney crony giving the reason why no way UR could be Gonzaga. Good informative post though.

I never expected to be another Gonzaga, just in the same universe. I would settle for only a good coach and better results would occur. You do know the Zags played in a glorified HS gym till the end of 2004 and were relevant for years before that.

When they considered building the New Kennel, the school was strapped for funds but Few convinced them it was necessary. PQ can and has just reached into his back pocket for the money they had to raise. Problem is he has invested too much of that pocket change in an inferior coach.

LOL too at the thought of Mooney leaving for a P5/6 job. Mooney would never admit it but knows just like everyone on this forum, zero chance at succeeding at that level.

Since Jacob and Cayo (maybe more?) are returning, can Mooney ever be honest with the Spiders fans of what he thinks/knows? Like OUR GOAL and EXPECTATION is to make the NCAA tourney even without a A10 regular season or tourney title? Every fan deep down knows it, just please say it Chris, or go into politics.

Wood, maybe I'm wrong in reading your post, but sounds like we agree in order to at least compete like a Gonzaga, getting a new coach is part of the process.

HAPPY EASTER TO ALL!

that was just a great, great game last night. players made plays all over the floor, and it didn't appear the defense was bad. I was texting family and friends before it even got to overtime that this was one of the best game I can remember. then that ending. very cool.

I hope tomorrow is at least half as fun.

Perhaps I wasn't concise enough. I am not a Mooney crony. I believe we need a new coach, and have re-directed my annual giving to the women's program.

We agree that to be Gonzaga-like, we need a coach as good as Few. We had one in Tarrant, but he was on the backside of his career. We had another one in Beilein, who, like Few, was still relatively young when he came to UR. Unfortunately for us, JB thought he had to go someplace else to truly hit the big time. So do 99% of all coaches who have Few's success at the WCC level.

Few was content to stay and make Gonzaga big-time, instead of seeking the big-time someplace else. Very few successful coaches from mid-major conferences have followed Few's example, the most recent who didn't being Porter Moser of Loyola of Chicago.

And having been to GU's campus many times since the mid-1980s, I am very familiar with its original Kennel, which the McCarthy Center replaced.

Glad to hear that about a new coach. My bad. Crony was not fair but just frustrated I guess. From what I read sounds like the old Kennel was quite the place. Never even knew of the college until J Stockton. You're right, Few is an once in a generation of coach staying put. Being a Spider fan was sure glad to see Smart leave VCU. Maybe he is home now at Marquette, but wonder if he ever thinks of what could have been across town?

Shaka did very well $$$ at VCU, but now he has generational money, thanks to UT. My guess is, his wanderlust is quenched and he stays at Marquette a long time.

But then, I thought GU would school UCLA by 20. So my opinion and $5 will get you a nice bowl of chili.

I agree but what if he doesn't win enough? Big name coaches are getting canned left and right. My $5 says he's a good enough coach/recruiter to do well in the BigEast but you never know.
Then he'll get fired. But if he's successful he won't leave to chase a paycheck at another opportunity, like he did at VCU (or like Few hasn't done at GU).

It’s been nice to see a Gonzaga and Baylor do well. I was tired of the one and done crap that Duke, North Carolina and Kentucky have started. Coach K and Roy Williams sold their soles to the devil and Calipari is the devil. Williams is gone, Coach K isn’t far behind. Calipari and Wade should soon be in jail. Maybe there will be some new teams that will get a chance to rise to the top.

When you say Calipari and Wade “should soon be in jail” and Calipari “is the devil”, what do you mean? Can you elaborate?

they've got the "strong ass offer" from Wade and did nothing with it.
I don't think there's anything directly linked to Calipari.

That was an incredible game. Juzang was the best player in the tournament, and is a high lottery pick waiting to happen. Gonzaga's starters played 44, 42, 40, 40, and 38 minutes. They played two bench guys, one 10 minutes, and one 9 minutes, and got four total points from their bench. Most 20 and 21 year old kids don't need a lot of rest. They just don't. And those that do get at least 8 media timeouts and halftime every game.

I wonder what Mooney has thought of all the ncaa tournament games. It’s not like he hasn't had the time to watch a lot of games over the last 10 years. I hope he’s been able to take some good ideas as far as basketball strategy away from some of the coaches in the big dance.

don't disagree I’ve been with u on the minutes thing. Tho there were just times where we struggled & it made sense to try other combos more but not for cardio reasons imo.

also Gonzaga guys played less in reg season than our guys (makes sense blowing teams out) so they may been fresher than us at end to handle. I think they could regardless but possibly a factor.

Our guys were 23 maybe we were too old! J/k tho we r a little old for college hoops.

UCLA played out of their minds in this tournament, and in particular Saturday night. I read yesterday that a computer simulation was done on the game based on shot difficulty and other analytics, and the average margin of victory for Gonzaga was over 20 points. Congrats to the Bruins. It was a wonderful game to watch.

Mick Cronin, Oats, Musselman....all good coaches plucked away from mid-majors recently, and they already have contenders. <sigh>

Told y’all Baylor would win. Taking them money line tonight was a great decision.
