+1 Ulla and Spiderman!
For those who like to watch the videos only one time, Grant is #32, and Bryce is #41. The article notes that Grant is taking on a leadership role, in his senior year, and it also appears that he may be back 100% from his broken ankle of a year ago. 29 points and 14 rebounds, in this key game bodes well for the remainder of the season. And, we may not have to worry so much about rebounding if we were to land a commitment from Bryce Golden too. The two brothers seem to be well-schooled in boxing out, and getting rebounding position! Note also that the first link, above, with the game score, includes some great snapshots from the game, suggesting that positive weight-room work has been ongoing... Both of the brothers appear to be strong!

And score 18 points before fouling out. Grant had 11 points in the first half.

It should be pointed out that Grant was up against Kentucky signee Sacha Killeya-Jones.

"And finally, 2016 five-star forward and UK signee Sacha Killeya-Jones just dropped 26 points, 16 boards and four blocks in Virginia Episcopal School's 56-53 OT win over Saint James at the National High School Hoops Festival."

Looks like Grant held his own prior to fouling out.

SFspider posted in another thread:

Bryce stats:

12/1 W @ Wakefield, 79-37: 9 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks
12/3 W St. John's 84-78: 15 points
12/8 W @ Allegany 76-60: 11 points
12/10 W @ Briar Woods 57-51: 19 points, 4 boards
12/12 L Virginia Episcopal 53-56 OT: ?
12/15 W Mercersburg 78-51: 13 points

13.4 ppg for the five games I found stats for.

From what I've seen, Bryce is considered a higher level recruit than Grant, once you account for him being two years behind."

Based on a couple of articles I have read, it sounds like Grant and Bryce get along well, and enjoy playing together. It would be great to have him join Grant at UR. Also, the article I read said that Grant currently consistently wins their one-on-one battles, and that Bryce needs mostly to work on his outside shot. Thanks for the above updates that show Bryce consistently in double figures, but with no "20+" games so far this season. I also read that Grant is an "A+" student, suggesting a great academic fit at UR.

A bit of backstory; Grant's coach commented on him at his signing:

Coach Dan Prete

"I'm excited that all of our signees have embraced the importance of being students and athletes. You can see this based on the level of universities they are choosing," said the coach.

"Grant (Golden) is a tremendous thinker," he said. "He is always thinking ahead. He always wants to be prepared for each game, and even for each practice. He is a joy to coach and to know as a person."

Going out on a limb saying Grant should be a great member of the Spider family. OSC

These stats do mean anything. What is important is how they perform against D1 players. Most of the players on the Spiders' team had great HS statistics. You are ready to call them All-Americans and Rhodes scholars. Get real.

-1, bb3831. Nice job of beign a Debbie downer! No one is crowning them as superstars quite yet, but they are clearly performing well this season, and Spider fans want as much video of highlights as we can get. To me the most important information to be gleaned from these stats is that Bryce is catching up to brother Grant in terms of some of the statistical categories (like points and rebounds). However, my bet is that Grant will stay well ahead of his younger brother in 3-point shooting and in assists, two very important categories for Spider big-men. Bottom line: It would be great if these two could play together for the Spiders, since they seem to have great "chemistry" (Grant feeding the ball to Bryce).

Ulla1, thanks much for the highlights link!!!

Bb3831 is an RPI sheep fan. Just ignore.
Not an RPI fan, a U of Phoenix fan. The point to be made is that you should temper your enthusiasm for a scholly by watching highlight films, They never miss. BTW, I think you once stated that your Mom has a degree from VCU.

bb is just used to the lamb board where you have to explain elementary stuff like this and where every high school player VCU is recruiting is a future all American, NBA all star player.

At St. James vs Goretti game; Grant and Bryce are really tall and really skilled!! Crazy atmosphere! OSC

Ulla, Tall and Skilled is exactly what we need! Hope we can get the 2nd Golden brother to join in the future fun. What was the game outcome and how did our two potential future Spiders perform?

This game was incredible. Did not know it was a rivalry game, thus was lucky to arrive 1.5 hours before the varsity game began as the gym was already substantially packed then, and later was standing room only. The noise was deafening. St. James lost in overtime to a good Goretti team aided by a little home cooking with the referees. Both Grant and Bryce played well given the circumstances. Grant had 18 points and numerous rebounds; Bryce had 13 points and a reported 12 rebounds. Grant was the leader on his team and generally made good decisions including a number of savvy passes. Grant must be 6’9”-6’10”; Bryce is perhaps 6’7”-6’8”. Both Grant and Bryce are long and very athletic. However, it was interesting that Bryce actually jumped center for St. James. St. James was missing Craig Lescesne due to an injury. The Spiders had some interest in Craig, but he enlisted at Pepperdine. St. James might have won the game, but they failed to get the ball into the hands of the Golden brothers with any consistency due to Goretti’s defense. A good example of Grant’s potential was exhibited in the latter stages of regulation when he shot and made several jump shots from a distance. In fact, Grant made St. James’ only three pointer. Both Grant and Bryce have good form on their jump shots, and actually jump quite high when they release them. Both brothers are good ball handlers and passers. I was able to meet Grant briefly before the game; he was very polite and looked forward to being a Spider. Hopefully, Bryce will follow in his brother’s footsteps. OSC

Ulla1, Thanks, as always for an incredible update on our recruits. We appear to be in great shape for the 1-3 positions, so it is the 4 and 5, the likely positions to be played by the Golden brothers, where we could most use reinforcements. Great to hear that they both have the versatility that our coaching staff has always targeted (including shooting, ball-handling, and passing)! The athleticism, jumping, and rebounding are icing on the cake. If Bryce has an edge on Grant it likely is in the jumping/rebounding arena, so it would be great to have them playing together. I look forward to more of your updates!

Should have mentioned that an impressive part of Grant's game was his ability to create his own shot from outside off the dribble; not too many big guys who can do this. OSC

Ulla, You appear to be our best source for Grant (and Bryce) Golden updates. I find it really interesting how Bryce seems to be developing this season, and how well the two are playing TOGETHER. Please keep your updates coming!

+1!! Thanks for the continuing great news. All three of our guys seem to be having GREAT years, and all have "blown-up," this year (especially Grant), if they had not done so already...

Grant Golden's team, St. James, won the championship of their league (a VERY tough one!) by defeating rival St. Maria Goretti. Goretti had beaten them in overtime earlier in the year at a game I attended. Apparently Grant just took over the game. Keep in mind Goretti is very good with several D1 recruits, yet Grant had 28 point and 19 rebounds! Here is an excerpt from the write up: OSC

"When Saint James coach Dan Prete wooed a tall kid and his younger brother from Sherando High in Winchester, Va., he might have suspected that championships would follow.
But he couldn’t have guessed the title his Saints captured on Saturday night would have come so easy.
With 6-foot-9 senior Grant Golden scoring 28 points and pulling down 19 rebounds and his sophomore brother Bryce Golden adding 14 points and eight boards, Saint James throttled St. Maria Goretti 74-46 in the Independent-Parochial School League championship game."

To save you reading, here is another quote I really liked:

"Saint James actually got off to a nervous start against the pressing defense of Goretti (15-11), committing eight turnovers in the first quarter. But after the Gaels took a 10-4 lead, Grant Golden took over the game.
He hit a put back of his own miss, added two 3-pointers and opened the second period with a jumper from the key, scoring 10 of the points in a 12-2 run that gave Saint James the lead for good.
“We kept saying, if we calm down and don’t commit turnovers, like we did last game, we’ll be just fine,” said Golden who hit 13 of 20 shots. “I didn’t expect to beat them like that. But we’re starting to feel it now. We’re starting to realize what (each other likes) to do.”

When I saw him play, I reported that he could really shoot from outside and was confident in creating his own shot from 3-point territory. Grant's 3-pointers started the run. Cannot wait for Grant to suit up next season. OSC

That first sentence means he rebounds!!!!! Love him already!!!!

So that article calls Grant a center, and he's listed as either an SF or a PF on various recruiting sites. I now have no idea what spot we're expecting him to play, but I guess that's a good thing.

For cryin' out loud, the kid is 6'10" as stated before. Take a guess where he will play! OSC
