Sorry "Cayo is Key" mafia, but it is Goose.

Yes the PF spot is a bit of a funk, but shooting guard is holding us back. As Bobby Black pointed out, Goose looks great shooting the 3, and we saw him splash that corner 3 last game. If he has continued to get back to 100% during this lay off, could be ready for 25 minutes of defense, hustle and yes we very much need some shooting from the off guard spot. That would be huge. If Goose is healthy, he can guard the guard spot. Looking for a Goose break out and season kick start against Davidson.

Goose over Wilson in the starting 5 please.
I think we are overselling Goose here. Goose is a nice bench option, but to expect him to start and make some noticeable impact to our final product is probably a stretch. That said, it can't hurt. I like Wilson a lot, his toughness, intensity and his defense, if the rest of our starting 5 had that same defensive intensity we would not be where we are at. But the lack of scoring at our guard position is a huge issue. Goose is not a big scorer either though.

Then let's try Dji

Bad take.

Gilyard is key to me. when he's playing really well, we're a different team.
Goose looked good last game. hopefully he builds on that.

As long as Isaiah is in the game we’re playing 4v5 on offense. I love his defense but he brings only negatives on the offensive side of the ball right now. He just can’t be getting this many minutes.

Is it possible that part of Gilyard’s offensive struggles are not having a competent #2 guard playing with him?

Not sure about that Ply. Yes, you can look much better and get more assists and team is much better with a good 2 guard. BUT, last year he stepped back playing next to Blake Franchise. THen looked really good when Chise was out in the NIT. So the offensive woes have continued. I think the shooting is mostly mental. Look at that step back almost no look 3 hit last game, nothing but net. Just let it rip Gilly.

Goose is making a lot of plays on defense. And just when I thought no one wanted to try to stop a driving GMU player last night, Goose did so and contested the shot as well. He must be a self motivated defensive player. When I coached youth travel teams I did notice that defense was very contingent on the coach motivating the players :).

Thought the back court was excellent last night, we need Gilyard to keep up that confidence and shooting and we have a shot.

I see this less as Isiah lost this starting job but rather Goose won the starting job. Goose is just making play after play out there.

Agree with this…there have been a couple of guys who’ve outworked the “starters” since the beginning of practice.
I don't see any practices, but it's got to be a combination of outworking and outperforming. granted some guys haven't gotten a lot of minutes, but I don't see anyone available on the bench who should clearly move up in the pecking order. Connor, Dji and Marcus are intriguing ... but haven't seen enough to say for sure.

Good points…we all know Dji is injured, Connor is the ? (I don’t understand it) and Marcus is a Fr. JOC had a quote from Coach on Twitter “We need to utilize that depth this week. Again, easier said than done. When you’re out there ... and you say, ‘Hey, why don’t you substitute and get guys going?’ It’s a little different when you’re in it and the lead goes from 7 to 4. Then you feel like … " I think we won’t really see what those 3 can do until next season. Then it’s out from the frying pan and into the fire.

Sign me up for 10+ Dji minutes a game when he’s healthy. Him and Goose are very similar players and I think Dji matches his intensity and length the best of our bench options when Goose needs a break. I don’t think Goose gets 34 minutes in the game last night if Dji is healthy

Agreed. Dji should get all of Wilson’s minutes and should also get some of Burton’s when he is missing his shots / playing poor defense.

Did anyone see the graphic on the opponents 3 point shooting percentage with Goose in the lineup vs our earlier pre Goose line up??

WOW. It was staggering. It does seem that Goose is playing his A$$ off on defense, and the metrics really really back up the eye test. Anyone recall the numbers - I thought I saw opponents shooting 35% pre Goose and 21% with Goose? What did you see SF ;)

yes I saw it. I think u have it right. If anything the pre-Goose # may have been even slightly higher. As I said in another thread Goose is the only person on the team who can make a player uncomfortable on O. We lose by double digits last night w/o him. And he should have ball more in his hands too to make plays, he still defers too much imo (mooney habits die hard) but getting more assertive.

Last night's broadcast was stats overload, but yes, 21% with Goose in there. We are 6–2 since he joined the starting lineup, but unfortunately we couldn't afford even those two losses.

I like Goose as much as the next guy and he's a solid defender, but no one guy is responsible for other teams shooting 21% from 3. not to mention he replaced Wilson, who's actually a good defender himself.

That was the metric, I was trying to be nice here Sman, the metric was specifically lineup with Goose vs Wilson. Wilson is a tough gritty defender, but shorter and per metrics huge difference with Goose in. I didn't make these up, but some people who say: "There are three kinds of lies: Lies, Damned Lies, and Statistics"

I tend to agree it seemed quite extreme, I think there also must be other factors influencing this difference.

First question would be, what was the early opponents' average % from 3 in total not just against us, vs the later opponents? So how much better or worse were we than that?

I liked the data overload, for the most part, but there were some parts when I just wanted to see how many shots we had taken and made but they were showing eFG% or something that I didn't understand.

One of the most interesting/valuable things to me was breaking down the court into various segments and showing how many shots each team attempted and made.
