Players and Coaches are equally responsible and accountable!

“I think they just played a lot tougher than us, honestly,” said UR freshman forward Tyler Burton,

“We’ve just got to get off to a better start, on both sides of the floor,” said UR guard Blake Francis (18 points). “I don’t think we were really focused on both sides coming out, and we’ve got to do a better job of that.”

Dick Tarrant used to voice amazement in the excuse of "not getting up for games" saying

You practice and train all year for the opportunity to play in the regular season and then you cannot get up 31 times?

We were flat in this and the ODU game now they have a Christmas break . whatever causes this lethargic effort needs to end....we can’t coast against anyone

When the program talks openly about this bring a convenience game prior to Xmas break - and philly bob black is as close to program as anyone - that naturally seeps into players heads. U can go through the motions, be looking ahead, take it more lightly etc.

As a team in A10 with 0 ncaa bids in 8 years we do not have that luxury any game.

Now I don’t mind at all playing this DC neutral site game near break. If it helps travel for the guys too that’s great we’re looking out for them. But on the coaches to eliminate that courtesy mindset.

I would not be surprised if mike Jones & his staff got wind of these comments and that’s 1 reason they came out more fired up.

Maybe this lump of coal in their stockings can be used to start the fire that motivates them in Tuscaloosa and beyond.

Yep seems to be a problem with this group, playing down to the competition. We got really luck vs St Francis. The good news is that we seem to get up for the big teams and games. But this trend scares me against the LaSalle's of the world.
Not sure if I am accurate on this, but this seems to be as stout as the A10 has been for quite some time. Admittedly, last couple years more focused on our woes and did not pay as close attention but it seems strong at the top (us hopefully, Dayton, VCU and URI possibly) and then you have another strong tier with Bonnies, Mason, Duquesne (maybe they are top tier?), SLU (top tier?) and Davidson. And LaSalle seems stronger.
A lot of tough games and if we are not up for any of those teams in the middle we can be beat easily, a la Radford.

Not many easy games to let down against for a while. Maybe the Philly Schools?

Absolutely. It was looked at as a throw in/convenience game for travel and that mindset was contagious. Incredible and inexcusable. Not getting the team "up" for every single game and ready to play has been one of CM's greatest flaws. Its blatant malpractice for a coach and he does it all of the time.

A real coach wouldn't have this problem getting up for games no matter how trivial. It's the coaches responsibility. I put none of this on the players.

This whole 10-1 streak is just smoke and mirrors.

Mooney is a bad seed.

Radford had zero problem being fired up for the game and to their credit they showed it on the court. Not being "hungry" for a victory was what we sadly showed on the court. Need to learn, not repeat, and move forward. That is the only viable option available.

Gilyard and Sherrod have to come to play and play the whole game. Nick can disappear for 25 minutes at a time. Seems they are starting to sit back and watch Blake and Grant play rather than being part of a 4 or 5 headed scoring monster. Gilyard seems to be sitting out the first half and then trying to turn it on late in the game. Mooney’s first 5 plays should be designed to feature each of the starters to get them involved in the scoring early.

Who is this real coach you are talking about who has never had a bad loss, or a loss to a lower rated team?

It seems to me that Duke May have had a bad loss already this year.
I agree VT4700.
But, I hope Mooney is smart enough to have a big sign that says - How did you do against Radford? hanging in the locker room. Lol

This reminds me of the Richmond-W&M game during the last season of Richmond's participation in the CAA. They were a 300+ team. Beilein was furiious. It cost the Spiders an at large berth in the NCAA tournament. We were beat for the last spot by a 15-14 Georgetown team with 15 wins almost all were out of conference cupcakes.

Georgetown finished the regular season 23-7 that year.

You're thinking of Georgia, not Georgetown.

We didn't show up for ODU either. Ok, Grant and Francis showed up. But the rest of the team didn't. Most notably Gilyard and Sherod as noted above. Gilyard seems to love playing at the RC but has a more difficult time sustaining that intensity on the road. If he is our leader, which I "think" he is, he needs to have more fire in his belly at all times.

If not, the mantle is going to be passed to Francis, who while not as skilled as Gilyard, plays with that same intensity all game long, no matter venue. Gilyard is the leader of this team, but he needs to step up now and show the team what type of effort it takes to win, night in and night out. Mooney needs to find rotational rest for Gilyard so that he can give that 110% effort when he is out there.
