10 years extension with no raise. I bet Mooney would take it. He is a Princeton guy and very smart.

Why is everyone so obsessed with the RPI? It is a hilariously bad metric for evaluating how good a team is.

RPI is mostly worthless, but I would say in this case we probably are about the 142nd-best team in the country based on our overall body of work. Lately, though we have played like a top-100 team.

We're 114 in KenPom..... a few more wins and the Top 100 banner will go up!

The real question is not what is everyone obsessed with...the question is what is the committee obsessed with...this year?

Probably because it is one of the metrics the NCAA selection committee uses. Also because it is fairly easy to understand how it is derived and provides a means of comparison between all schools based upon how they did, who they played, and where they played them.

Is it flawed, of course it is, pretty much all metrics like this have their shortcoming, including offensive effiency ratings.

Whatever the case, it doesn't take a rocket scientist, to look at our RPI of 142 and say, yep, that is pretty much where we deserve to be.

If you want a quick look to check at-large possibilities of a team, RPI+Kenpom<100 has I believe been a good measuring stick.
Even SBU last year RPI 29 + Kenpom 79 = 108.

The RPI is the most unstable of all metrics, it can change by a ton game to game especially at this point in the season. Today's RPI is not a good indicator of the end-of-season RPI used by the committee.

And I don't think I have met more than one or two people who actually understand how the RPI is calculated.

Agree. Too erratic. I rarely look at the RPI until late in the season for selection purposes. Kenpom #115 (schedule 167) and Sagarin #116 (schedule 159) IMO more accurate.

It all depend on how Mooney finishes this season. We are playing well the last three games but how long is that going to last? Take every game like it matters.

Mooney doesn't deserve a contract extension even after tonight's win. After the non conference results everyone was ready to fire him.

If we keep this roll and go .800 in conference, would it be because of Mooney's coaching or the freshmen that were ultimately brought in by Mooney, and he stood out of the way? Would other schools knock on Mooney's door and offer him a job? Some might feel sad about that, but others might think it's an opportunity to bring in someone more suited to the talent we have and the talent we have coming in. Would that talent leave if Mooney leaves? I doubt it. Let's keep this roll going and see what happens.

Is your assertion that CM is winning in spite of himself? I'm hardly a Mooney apologist, but I think you can't blame him for the recent lack of success in both wins and recruiting, and then not give him credit when things start to run the right direction.

I think it's too early to say the latter has happened, but for now I'll give him credit for the positive direction.

If anyone listened to TJ after the game, he gave 100% credit to Mooney for breaking and exploiting the 1-3-1 defense.... good coaching? maybe.....

My thoughts are this. 9-4 in the A10 is very good and Mooney to some extent should get credit; especially given our OOC record. But the truth is that the A10 is in a down year this year, and a lot of the teams we played and beat didn't have one of their best players playing. Mooney is not a good coach in that he will not take us to the next level and make us an NCAA contender every year or other year. Unfortunately, he is "good" enough where the higher ups don't have the obvious pressure to fire him. Sadly, we will be stuck with him for the next 5 years.

Predicting a 5.5 point favorite would win in regulation was some kind of gutsy call?

I mean, that prediction really could have "swung either way"...

This is a joke right?

As far as I know, only the lambs want a contract extension.

Also GMUers would love to see it as well.

Joke kind of.... You know this discussion is coming. At some point Mediocre Mooney will ask for an extension because without it he'll claim he can't recruit. It's the one of the big problems of a strict policy that you won't buy out contracts.
