One of the greatest improvements in the team so far this year is free throw percentage. At 80.3% the spiders are tied for 7th place among all D1 teams. Whoever helped the team with free throws has done a great job. All 5 of our starters are shooting well.

Francis 77%
Gilyard 78%
Sherod 83%
Cayo 90%
Grant 80%

Sorry, I should have added this to another post.

Has Coach Fezz been seen sneaking into the RC and teaching these boys to put their right hand behind the ball and get some back spin?

I’ve been incredibly impressed with the turnaround on free throw shooting. Hopefully the guys will continue to hit at this rate. Whatever adjustments were made with Grant and Cayo in particular are noteworthy. Curious if there was an outside instructor involved or if it was just good old fashioned practice.

I don't know. If we keep this up we will never be able to get rid of the coaching staff.
Well, it's not like we were getting rid of them, when they couldn't hit the broad side of a barn from the FT line either. Cayo had a huge issue with his form last year that has been noticably better this year. The rest of the guys, I think it is practice and honestly FT shooting is a bit contagious. If guys are hitting than that is likely to continue.

I know it's near sacrilege on here to credit Rob Jones with anything at all, but the article from a couple weeks back credited Rob with helping Cayo reform his free throw shooting stroke.

"With help from UR assistant Rob Jones, Cayo eliminated a hitch in what was an awkward free-throw delivery system. This season, it’s smoother, one motion."

There have been a few season in which Rob is the best shooter on the team, so that does not surprise me.

I think you are speaking to me specifically. I could make a reference about a blind squirrel and a nut, but I won't:)

I've also been told Rob has a strong hand on the defensive improvement.

Just checked the season stats, the team is just a hair under 80% (.796). Even though they haven't shot that many...108..., it's still very impressive! I don't know who is responsible for this turnaround (maybe coachfezz?), but I hope this continues!

We are currently tied for 9th in the country in FT percentage, although as SpiderRick mentioned, not getting the the line that much.

Yeah, there is really good news and actually really bad news on the FT situation thus far. We are Top 10 in the country on shooting percentage which is great as noted and much improved as discussed above. However, as Rick has noted we aren't getting to the line much. In fact, we have been pretty bad at this. We are 343rd (bottom 20) in what percentage of our shots are FTA vs. FGA - - which is a better measure than just FTs shot. This stat historically has a very strong correlation to winning - - - one of the highest correlations of all stats. And that makes sense as its pretty easy to understand that getting to the line for free points is a really good thing. We are also 343rd in what % of our points comes from the line (only 12%). This is another way of measuring effectiveness at getting free points (and sorta combines gettting there and making them). Our three point shooting is both the cause of this (you don't get to the line by shooting three pointers) and the reason the lack of FT shooting hasn't hurt us (we have been really good at shooting those 3's). Going to move the 3 point shooting to a new thread talking about a lot of advanced stats and what they tell us and what they might mean, but wanted to get the FT comment in here in the FT thread and acknowledge how important what Rick brought up is!!

Virginia was #214 in FT attempts last year. Hampton (18-17) was 6th, and WVU (15-21) was 15th.

This stat does not concern me at all, and a lot of games, you don't shoot many foul shots because you're up by 10 or more late and the other team doesn't even bother fouling you.

Philly good points but hard to get to line if you are hitting open 3 pt shots. I think because we were bigger
than USA that when we did have ball inside they would defend but not hack. Mooneys offense is not a power game that creates a lot of fouling. How many games this year did we go to line more than 15 times and what were circumstances? Has any opposing players fouled out against us?

I was choppin' wood, not broccoli, yesterday so I wasn't at the game. But the reports seem to indicate that our guys were getting hacked, it just wasn't getting called.

A stat I do like a lot, is we are 2nd in the country in assist to turnover ratio, and are fourth in assists per game. Our 2010-2011 team was 9th in assist/turnover ratio and 16th in 3 pt percentage. I could not find free throw attempts, but we were 189 in free throw percentage. Let's just keep making threes, move the ball and get assists, and protect the basketball with very few turnovers, and we should be awfully good, whether we get to the line a lot or not.

Agreed.

Also, we’re a jump shooting team. While often that is used as a negative against team, that is clearly this team’s strength (Nick, Gilly, Francis). Also, we’ve had a couple games where our main inside scorers were out altogether or injured.

Overall, it doesn’t concern me that we’re not shooting a lot of FT’s, and happy that when we do, we’re making them!

At least we're not getting some of our players deliberately fouled in the last 5 minutes, like last year when some were a liability at the end of the game.

Applaud the improvement. Begs the question, why wasn't the retooling done two years ago when Cayo arrived? Probably would have won a few more games the last couple of seasons.

I would assume there were bigger issues that he needed to focus on. He came in as a pretty raw athletic prospect. I would say he’s been one of the bigger success stories for Mooney in terms of total improvement.

Another week into the season and the guys are still shooting 80% as a team, good for 8th in the country. Just a remarkable change so far from a year ago.
This makes such a huge difference in a game. Keeps you in a tight game with a good team and helps you pull away from bad teams. Also opposing teams stop playing Hack-a-Spider. Many benefits to hitting free throws.

14 games into the season now and we are still an 80% free throw shooting team, good for #2 in the country. Grant is the only starter shooting under 80%. What was a hindrance the last few years has now become a strength.

The addition of Blake and having Nick back in the lineup along with Nathan's huge improvement seem to be the biggest differences.

nathan, that is dead and buried....let's stop hopping on spilled milk!!! Focus on today only!!

I don’t want to focus on today, when no one plays. I want to focus on tomorrow when everyone does. ;)
