Francis on Pistons Summer League Team

Blake was one of a bunch of guys who didn't get into the game. The Pistons' roster is almost as big as ours...playing time is going to be tough to come by.

Didn't even get a single minute tonight. Probably be sent somewhere overseas. Pistons are just taking him on a ride. Too many players ahead of you. I would just resign and find somewhere to play. Where you actually get minutes. Not just sit on the bench the whole game.

it's one game, he needs to see how things play out over the next several games and then have the conversation, where do I fit into your plans going forward

They may have a rotation to look at and he may be part of rotation for next game.
He is only small guard they have.

Tricky situation for him, because the Pistons are in a rebuild and just drafted three guys who are probably going to be a big part of it, so they are going to want to see a lot of them initially.

Majority of summer league rosters don't make the NBA teams. So this is not a surprise. Most of summer league is to get draft picks some work, some rookies from previous year some work, and then fill out rosters as best you can. If you get lucky - you find a guy worth signing maybe to your D-league team.
But its not a bad experience and its a good thing to put on your resume for overseas teams.
What Francis will have to decide is does he chase the NBA dream and take less money in the G-League. Or does he look for a more lucrative offer overseas, but that will likely mean put the NBA dream in the back seat for a few years. Its a tough decision for any player - as both have pros and cons.

Not like he has much choice. It'll be over in a week and he'll move on to something else.

He's getting valuable time around an NBA environment. It's all about making connections that may help in the future.

Agree...its about practicing with the team, playing with different guys and skillsets and making a name for himself among coaches, front office guys, scouts, etc. It's also helpful for him to see how to start having basketball as a career--even if its not in the NBA.

of course worry about it. but nothing he can do. just be ready if he gets a chance.

Blake getting a bit of run tonight. Only 1-of-4 shooting, but a couple of steals and an assist. Hope he gets some more time in the second half.

Blake finished with just the 2 points on 1-of-6, although one of them was a halfcourt heave attempt at the end of the third.

He certainly filled up the stat sheet in other ways though…tied for team high with 6 assists in just 13 minutes and also had 3 steals.

He isn't making the roster. I think it's time to move on.

Move on how?

(Looks like the Pistons have at least one more game added since the original four-game schedule was announced. They play the Magic tomorrow.)

Reminds me a bit of KA when he played in the NBA summer league. Good enough for some summer league reserve action but so far away from being a rostered NBA player (and KA was a MUCH better player than Blake). Neither of their games translate as an NBA player.

I'm sure Blake has a plan but not sure why he isn't looking at going to make some good money over in Europe as his first option. He can and will make good dough in a Euroleague and suspect that is where he will eventually end up.

Personally, I like seeing a Spider playing in the summer league though.

agreed, but he's taking a shot at the dream. he'll still be able to go overseas.

Yeah, he obviously had no real chance to end up on an NBA roster but hopefully this gets him some good offers overseas.

So, why try to improve your game and get a taste of what pro ball is about by being around a bunch of talented guys, including future star Cade Cunningham, when you can just quit, right?

Blake got 14 minutes in last night's game...4 points on 2-of-6 shooting, 4 fouls, and nothing else on the stat sheet. That's it for the summer league season...some games today, but the Pistons are done.

I will never criticize someone for chasing their dream. I hope he can find a way to monetize his talents and still gain personal satisfaction.

How could anyone criticize Blake? I just don't get it. The guy busted his butt every possession for us. Brought intensity and talent every team needs. Got hurt, played hurt, and battled his ass off for 2 years here. Is that where we are now? Spider fans criticizing our past players, even those talented enough to make an NBA camp? Are they really Spider fans?

He basically got to play with pros and build his resume, nothing to crap on here. He's going to make money playing professional basketball somewhere - good for him.

Francis is a good player, was a good player for UR, and will have a nice pro career. The only question he has to answer for himself is does he chase the money in Europe, or stay home in G-League making less money, but easier for a mid-season call up.

I would say at this point, given he didn't see much action in the Summer League - I would chase the money in Europe for a few seasons, see if he can put up some good numbers over there and then maybe get another invite to the summer league. But that is up to him and his preference. He will do fine, and our hope should be he has a good career somewhere so we can sell that to potential recruits.

Blake Francis isn't even listed on the roster anymore. I can't find him playing anywhere. I guess he is playing in another country. Just more evidence that Mooney doesn't prepare these guys for the next level.

That's just ridiculous. Blake doesn't have the physique or basketball skills to make it in the NBA...silly to say that's on Mooney

Mooney should have known if he had the skillset. Giving false hope for something that wasn't going to workout. It's like watching the football game today. We can't even throw the football.
