If they have a football hall of fame, they should have a hall of fame for really bad ideas.
The first bad idea that comes to mind was the hiring of Latrelle Scott.

I live in SEC country. Gameday has to become an event. The game, while of ultimate importance, needs to be packaged with ancillary entertainment and activities that makes attending a Richmond Football game, a happening and not just sports competition. An intended consequence of doing this is the marketing of the program to high school recruits.

One of the first things I would do is create a school band (not high school guests), drill, and dance teams. The more people you have on the field on game day, the more parents, relatives, and friends you have in the seats on Saturday afternoon.

Additionally, a true night game or two, where pyrotechnics could be used to 'light up the sky' would be great.

The university has so much to offer...we just have to offer it properly....toot our own horn...and properly invest in our university's future.

This x100. Unfortunately there's tremendous apathy to this. I thought a true pep band and not a band for hire for basketball was needed desperately. It's going to require someone from a big atmosphere like an SEC school who gets that part of the game to implement this.

Not recruiting a kicker, who can kickoff longer than 35 yards. How many coaches over the years refused to recruit a kicker?

Leaving city stadium. Completely changed the gameday atmosphere from an actual football crowd to a Squirrels game. Yes it had to happen, but I don’t think we implemented it right.
The best game day tailgating across the country is on campuses and I've made it a point to visit many of them. I'm not sure what the issue(s) is/are but in my opinion Richmond's campus isn't it.

Completed unasked for but honest response from a rival:

I think moving from City Stadium to a smaller on campus "stadium" was a turning point for you guys. Fresh off a Natty and you downsize? The tailgate scene at city stadium was bigger than it is now on campus.

Your campus is amazingly beautiful and my favorite away game tailgate. I just think you have to convince the students to come out en masse. Maybe it's the fractured nature of the all the lots on campus? Not one big central spot to park? I dunno. You have the environment necessary for an amazing tailgate but I agree with whampas it's hard to pinpoint exactly why it's not a big scene.

Point well taken. Parking is an issue on campus. If the liability issues could be worked out, a free tram service (ala amusement park trams) with designated boarding stops on game day would be a Godsend.. I've seen some senior fans struggle to hike upwards of a mile to make it to the stadium gates. In fairness, I will say, there are other inter-city universities with on-campus stadiums that have the same challenge. But your point is valid and well-taken.

Consolidate all season ticket holder parking spaces into a couple lots and open up one of the other lots adjacent to RC for general public to pay to park. That certainly would improve general public access to the stadium and make the prospects of tailgating more attractive. Given the number of empty spaces in the lots adjacent to the stadium on game day, there is absolutely the capacity to do something along these lines to improve parking for general public.

For those that have heard it before, they know the university got screwed by the neighborhood on many levels. All in a ploy to get a lot of money that backfired. There is a long sorted history here that spans decades (and I’ll readily admit I’m sure I only part of the story).
and yes, it really changed the landscape of the program.

Not sure i understand. First I have heard of this.

1) Band idea is absolutely correct - don't understand why this has gotten no traction especially since our school president is now more interested in Music (he is a music professor and classical musician).
2) Tailgating - it starts with the students. If you get the students involved not only in tailgating but inside the stadium as well - the experience builds from that. It is hard to build a college gameday experience without student support. I know this would upset paying fans because parking is a premium on campus, but I would suggest the following.
The 2 lots directly in front of fraternity lodges should be closed off for student tailgate parties. No cars in there at all. Lodges should be open 2-3 hours before kickoff. If its a 1 pm game - its a 10 am Kegs and Eggs tailgate. If its a night game at 6 pm - its a perfect pre-game warmup for students before going out on a saturday night.
To aid in the parking - they need to create some shuttle services for the paying customers. I think there is enough parking throughout campus when you take into account all the parking on the other side of campus, but should make it easier for folks to get to and from their tailgate to the stadium.
3) More night games - and I am okay with the 6 pm game, but should also try to have 7 pm games as well.

Are there enough talented musicians on campus to even field a band? I played in my high school band and I sucked. Not that easy to throw a band together and actually be able to listen to it.

It would probably take 2-3 years to get it rolling, but I am sure it is possible. Especially since you have so many local bands around in the high school area - this is one more area they can highlight on their application. Not to mention for our out of state applications - this would be good as well.

Of course - you would likely need to give out some band scholarships, which might mean we have to cut Men's golf. Don't want to many athletes or band members taking up the general student population at UR.
