30 kickoffs, ZERO touchbacks

33 yard average punting

These are stats I would expect from a mediocre high school team. 'nuff said....

I think we all know Trau's forte will never be long kickoffs which is why I assume Chereson was brought in after spending 4 years at Notre Dame. According to Richmondspiders.com, Chereson first redshirted, then didn't see any action with the Irish for two years. Last year, he saw action in 4 games, had 16 kickoffs and averaged 56.7 yards per kickoff with 4 touchbacks.
This year he's had 12 kickoffs, only averaging 49.3 yards and no touchbacks. He's 7 yards off of what he averaged last year. Kicking off from the 35 you need to kick it 65 yards just to get it to the end zone. The numbers just aren't looking too good on many touchbacks this season.

Was Cherson a walk on at ND? Most P5 schools kickers have ability to get
it to the goal line frequently.

Given the pattern, is there any chance he is being instructed to kick it as he is?

I hope Trau is resting these two weeks to let that groin muscle heal. He looked like he could barely walk off the field after PATs.
I cannot help but imagine that there is some discomfort when he kicks. Second Cherson would be given the green light to go
deep if he could consistently get it to the end zone, so thus positional kicks. In addition the coaches are using prominent starters on Kick Off
duties due to fact we are allowing so much run back space. Lastly Helkowski I am more comfortable with this year, but I thought he was also
a backup kicker and if so I wonder what his kick off distance would be like. I wonder if anyone had seen him practicing at all kick offs?

I watched kickers from all over the country at multiple levels of football bang kickoffs into the end zone this weekend. I'm struggling to understand why we are having such a problem with this too.

Do we have any offers out for punters and kickers for next year?

did we not lose a recruit to JMU for a place kicker for 2018?

just thinking back Tech seemed to return virtually all of Clemson kickoffs. I can't believe if every team has a kicker kicking unreturnable balls Clemson would.
So I checked

Interesting stats

Interestingly, look at the FCS stats....16 teams(including Richmond) have not kicked a TB in the 4-5 games to date, while 16 teams have kicked a total of 9 or more in the first 4 or 5 games. 20 teams have kicked one TB, and the other 67 teams have kicked more than 1, but less than 9 in the first 4-5 games.

I know it's anecdotal, but a few weeks ago I watched the kicker from Columbia (the school not the country) kick 5 straight touchbacks. Yoder is the only kicker I can recall that could do it for us.

As far as Helkowski, he's started every game since he's been here, and he's a senior. He has never averaged 40 yards, and has probably had half dozen blocked. Maybe some don't see this as a problem, but it's certainly not a plus. In close games (pretty much all CAA games), field position is huge. I don't like the idea of trying to turn him into a rugby style punter, I always thought that the thing he did best was with his hang time.

I see yours and raise you one. Jason Stricker a junior at Marvin Ridge HS outside Charlotte. These are his Sophomore highlights. Notice the kickoff from the 25 that went all the way down to the 10. The 43 yd FG that would have been good from 55. These kids are out there.

Delaware kickoff man has 47 touchbacks in a year and a half. And they don't even score that much. It should be a priority to find a kid with a strong leg, consistent touchbacks can change the whole game.

The kickoff is the only play in football in which one player has complete control over the outcome of the play. Think about that...

Ivy League kicks off from 40 not 35 beginning this year.

What was the difference in average starting position yesterday afternoon? Could not have been pretty.

Ha! I learn something new every day. If anybody here knew that obscure factoid, it would be 32......

Ivy wants to absolutely reduce kickoff returns in order to reduce any injuries and potential long term CTE effects. When those Ivy boys grow up and write those big checks to their Alma Mater they need to spell their school’s name correctly and with strong penmanship.

Can see Ivy doing away with kickoffs altogether in a few years.
