UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - As a result of fan surveys conducted after each home football game last season, the University of Richmond athletics department is announcing a series of enhancements designed to improve the game day experience at Robins Stadium.

Fresh off the football team’s 2014 FCS Playoff Second Round appearance, a current national top 25 ranking and 1-1 record thus far in the season, the Spiders look forward to an exciting home schedule in 2015! Please note just some of the game day enhancements:

  • A new pre-game show has been developed to create an exciting atmosphere prior to kick-off that features an exciting new team entrance with pyrotechnics! Don’t be surprised to see a skydiver or two!
  • The athletics department has created a new program incentivizing local high school bands to perform at Spider football games and these bands will be incorporated into the new football pre-game show.
  • There are several new menu items being introduced exclusively at Robins Stadium this season. Located at both permanent stands on the east and west side of the stadium, we introduce the first-ever extreme food item to Robins Stadium, the Walking Taco! The Walking Taco will feature fresh lettuce and tomato, shredded cheese, and a heaping mound of taco meat, all loaded into a crunchy bag of Fritos! The Walking Taco is very portable and easy to eat! Additionally, fans can now enjoy even more delicious food options at Robins Stadium including steak and cheese sandwiches, Italian sausage, corn dog nuggets, a chicken caesar wrap and kettle corn. Exclusive to the Sweet Frog Family Fun Zone, kids and parents alike can treat themselves to funnel cakes, fried Oreos, cotton candy and fresh squeezed lemonade.
  • Officials’ instant replay will be instituted at every home game and the University of Richmond will be only one of three Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) institutions that will be utilizing instant replay at every home game regardless of whether the game is televised.
  • All Spider home and away football games will air live on the Spider IMG Sports Network. In Richmond, all broadcasts are on ESPN 950AM and HANK-FM 93.1. Audio broadcasts are available on mobile devices on the Spider Mobile App, ESPN950 app and TuneIn app.SpiderTV will provide live video streaming in HD of home games, available on computers and mobile devices. For the first time, SpiderTV will produce telecasts of two home games. The Sept. 19 game vs. VMI (6pm) and the Oct. 3 game vs. Maine (3:30pm) will air live on Comcast SportsNet Plus and WTVR 6.3 (Comcast Channel 206; Verizon Channel 466). The Spider IMG Sports Network welcomes Chris Anderson as the new analyst for football broadcasts. Anderson was a captain and all-conference defensive back for the Spiders from 1995-1999. He joins Voice of the Spiders Bob Black, sideline reporter Matt Smith and studio scoreboard host Matt Josephs on the broadcasts.
  • There will be fewer on-field promotions and contests and our in-game giveaways will be thrown/shot to all parts of the stadium.
  • Additional signage has been added around campus to help fans find general parking convenient to the stadium and so that fans can easily find our FREE shuttle service to the stadium. The service provides fans with a safe and efficient way to enter Robins Stadium. The FREE shuttle service starts approximately 2 hours before the game to give fans time to arrive for tailgating.
  • Additional signage has also been added around Robins Center to help fans find the WILL CALL window (Ticket Window 2).
  • The University continues to tweak the sound system throughout the stadium to try to provide a more consistent level and clear sound during the game.
The Richmond athletics department continues its commitment to focus on the student game day experience. New enhancements for students this year feature:

  • A new tailgating location for students in parking lot B7. This space will provide some students the opportunity to park and tailgate behind their cars. Additionally, DJ’s will perform, and food trucks will offer food and drink and much more,
  • The ability for students to scan their student ID’s to gain entrance to the football game (as opposed to claiming in advance),
  • The ability to use their “dining dollars” at designated concession stands and snacks and water provided between the 3rd and 4th quarters, and
  • Enhanced sound in the student section. Speakers have been added to the student section and the cheerleaders will be moved in front of the student section to allow for a louder and more intimidating student section.

Sounds good. Question......if we have parking for B7 does that mean we can go to the food trucks too? That would cut down on the tailgate costs. Just fill the car with beverages...ha

Why did they do away with the season ticket cards? AD said that is what the fans want, but it just seems to me a card is just more convenient.

mixed bag on the improvements. Food lines were horrific. I realize that it's mostly volunteers, but they struggled last year with a limited menu. The additional items just seemed to result in total confusion.

Fireworks were a nice touch but kids area was more congested with the space narrowed.

Love having replay capabilities. Just need to get video board to show the replays.

Uniforms were pretty sharp. Not sure if those will be the same all season long but I liked them.

Last - please get the announcer a lesson on how it works when 2 players have the same number and one plays defense.

Someone took the "Make Noise" screen to heart. The problem is,evidently, that is what is supposed to pass for music today. They also may want to re-think the aptly named "Ball Buster" operation.

Then again, I am an old fart.

Wishing I was a mere 30 year Spider. We are a very diverse mix of Spider alums on this board. Hopefully, we are more united in our support of the Spiders, than we can be divided over petty differences.

we don't have to agree on everything to support the Spiders that we love

Agree about the announcer. Saying Stephon Jacob had the interception should not happen, especially because it is our HOME guy. You would think he would naturally know some players, but other than that I liked the new entrance/fireworks

I also liked the elimination of the "games" being played -- if you want to do things like that at halftime (when we don't have a band to play, other events, or similar) it may be okay

Best game experience at the Brickhouse including skydivers and fireworks.Great to see the place at capacity thanks to Keydet contingency.Entry to field from endzone was a smart idea.Instant replay was a necessary addition.Thought video board was fine. The DB of the speakers near Sec 206 was deafening at times.Cheerleaders in front of student section was a good idea in attempting to keep high student interest. With game in control, most of that section was gone mid 3rd period.Overall crowd began to thin as well.Believe that announcer said that the VMI would be marching when it was the Crosby band.Oh well.
Announcer either didn't read or forgot the recent JOC piece in RTD about UR duplicate numbers on 9/17.Here's the piece:

Maybe if they put the names back on the jerseys, the announcer might get it right! Sorry but I don't like the new jersey, they LOOK like practice unis to me.

we have always had name on our unis and they were in BIG letters which really look great on tv, cannot stand little letters that some teams utilize, look cheap. like red but really liked our old red over these but not a big deal, keep winning and we can wear anything.

In all honesty, the one thing that is pretty annoying is the announcer saying, "It's another Richmond Spiders ......" thus expecting a response from the crowd of "first down". Not a big deal, just seems a little bush league.

I did not like the new jerseys. They looked cheap. I was a big fan of what we wore last year. Bad choice .

Loved the jerseys, but I do prefer having names on the back. Everything seemed good as far as I noticed, though I did get "trapped" with my son and a ton of other people in the kids' zone after introductions because they had to inflate the tunnel that they use to funnel people between the stands and the kids' zone. Not a big deal, but seems like there should be a way to have that ready to go sooner.

Didn't get a survey and I've been a season ticket holder since the stadium opened.

I hated the interruption to replays with that nonsensical graphic saying "First down..."
childish at best. What- we didn't know that already- boneheads!

Interesting likes/dislikes on the new jerseys--I liked them a lot but would like the players names on the back. The navy ones we have with those red/white stripes in the patterns looked to be the cheap ones to me and I don't like them at all.

As long as thy are the right color, you can see the numbers easily, and read the names easily I'm OK with them it the players are happy with them -- after all they are the ones that have to wear them

Nice to have the Cosby High School band. The band loved doing it, according to several band members. We should have a different HS band every week. Fireworks were a good touch too. Guess we will have to keep working on the Blue Angels fly over! :)

Don't like it either, but it's been going on since before the new stadium opened. I thought people liked it becaise they kept doing it, but i guess i was wrong. Of course, we could be like the Hampton guy with "MOVE THE CHAINS!!!!", which would be fun.

the "first down" or "move da chains" chants, along with the third down "gong" has been going on at every stadium, even pros, for years and agree, time for them to go. if we have something original at the ROB, all for it but to be doing the exact same thing as everyone else is just boring and old. either find something new or deep six those for good.

Please, please remove that idiotic graphic that they interrupted the video replay to show.
"Move those chains" is trite, and certainly doesn't' to be enhanced with a childish graphic .

There's a good chance that if the staff gave out $5 bills at the entry gates, folks would complain about something.

LOL. You're so right 2k. I, for one, really like the new jerseys, the childish graphics (I'm guessing they're for the children in the crowd), the effort by the administration and my new seats in 205. Let's win this thing. Go Spiders.
