The Atlantic 10 Conference has named Duquesne junior Michael Hughes and Richmond junior Jacob Gilyard as A-10 Co-Players of the Week. Saint Louis freshman Gibson Jimerson was selected as Rookie of the Week. The awards were announced Monday and are for games played Dec. 2-8.
Hughes was 10-of-11 (.909) from the field in posting his third double-double of the season with 23 points and 11 rebounds to lead Duquesne to its seventh-straight win and remain undefeated. A center from Kansas City, Hughes' 23 points were a career high, and he added four blocks in the win over VMI for Duquesne’s best start (7-0) in 40 years.
A guard who also hails from Kansas City, Gilyard totaled 33 points, 17 assists, 12 rebounds, 10 steals without committing a turnovers as the Spiders went 2-0. He shot 67 percent (12-for-18) from the field and 58 percent (7-of-12) from 3-point range. He scored his 1,000th career point on a free throw with 2:54 left in first half versus Hampton, where he finished with an 18-point, 10-assist double-double.
Jimerson led the Billikens with 22 points in their win against Tulane, SLU's only game of the week. The guard from Richmond, Va., was 8-of-15 (.533) from the field and 6-of-12 (.500) from 3-point range. Jimerson, who was also named Rookie of the Week last week, was part of a school-record shooting performance as the Billikens broke the school record for 3-pointers made in a game with 17.
