Use of Wake Offensive resources included a very successful but now former UR offensive strategy used under Dave’s UR tutelage.

1.Big and Mobile QB(Tutt,Ward)

2.Throw to TE(Joe Stewart)

3.Thicker RB who dishes out punishment(Hightower,Vaughn)

1.QB-

  • After the Deacs and Spartans traded a pair of touchdowns early in the second quarter, Newman hit redshirt senior tight end Jack Freudenthal on a 44-yard touchdown strike. Michigan State added a field goal in the final minute of the half to make the halftime score, 21-20.

Can you imagine what he could do if he could recruit at the level of a Clemson or Bama or Notre Dame

I always felt that if UVA could have landed Clawson that he’d have won a ton there.

I am a huge Clawson fan but point #1 is a little bit of revisionist history. Clawson went with Levi Brown at QB over both. If not for a couple of drops in close losses I suspect he’d have stuck with Levi. Alas, wasn’t the case and after the off slow in 2005 Tutt took back over, Tim Hightower went from backup fullback to starting tailback and Levi transferred (and then put up huge numbers in the Sun Belt I believe).

I will say that I still believe that UR is best with a pro style offense. Recruit a strong oline, good TEs and balanced rushing & passing. I just think that appeals more to the recruiting base.

You are correct about Levi putting up big numbers in Sun Belt, he ended up as Offensive Player of Year in conference if I remember correctly.
As I remember he transferred after Eric Ward was the starter in 06 and we know that worked out for Spiders. I was glad to see it worked out well for Levi as well. I think Levi was actually on the Buffalo Bills roster for a couple of years as the number 3 QB.
