Charleston game

remember the students are on break -- expect a skeleton squad at best

This three game stretch is huge. Any one of these three games could be considered trap ones. Add that we are coming off exams for this game, our first true road game(sorry Hampton) and a neuteral game next week I’m hoping we can avoid any letdowns. Heading into Alabama with only one loss would be huge for us. I expect us to come down a little during A10 play just because of the familiarity of the programs, so we need to rack up as many wins possible in the non conference.

This game is all about controlling Grant Riller #1, he is the pre-season CAA conference player of the year, 17 points away from 2000, their leading scorer with 21 points a game. He is not a great 3 point shooter. Will be interesting to see who covers him.

Someone needs to step up and take a charge from Riller. He can’t shoot, he’s just driving like a bowling ball every time down the floor

Seems like out first win in awhile where the score towards the end was close enough for the other team to try to foul.

It was a fun game to watch, for the most part. I thought the crowd was pretty decent, too. #1 on Charleston is a ball hog the likes of which I haven't seen for awhile. Dude was not even looking for anyone to pass it to in the last 3-4 minutes of the game. Funny.

You mean the guy with a higher assist per possession ratio than Gilyard? Yeah he is...

Well I haven't watched him except tonight, and he seemed to think he was the only player on his team. he's a good player, but I mean seriously was not even looking at anything other than the basket about 6 times in a row down the stretch.

I think we just saw what the minutes are going to be like moving forward. Sal and Burton will be fighting for minutes after the starting five and Gus. The closer the game the more this pattern will hold.

Well you might not be too far off. While he appears to be 72nd in the nation in assists, 79th in steals. He is also 31st in possession %. That might translate into Ball Hog.

Same strategy Broad Street U uses game after game against us. When the refs "fall for it" the technique continues. Riller was smart enough to do it and get the calls, but 2020 you are accurate in your assessment.

Only thing I’m not sure he is accurate about is shooting. If he means threes than yes (21%). But he does shoot 61% from 2, and 84% from the line.

. Crowd sounded electric on the tv!

Really good effort by the guys. I think better teams are going to find ways to make us pay on dribble drive, we still aren’t great at defending that. On the other end, very impressed with our ability to find points.

Yes Riller shoots well on 2's because he is fearless on drives to the hoop and most of his attempts are close in. We do need to figure out how to stop the dribble drive without getting charged for a foul. Our defense moves so much that it makes it tough to "clog" the lane and have the driving opponent called for a charge.

Good game for us because it exposed team to something that needs some work regarding drives to basket. Golden is much improved on defense and rebounding due to Mooney giving him rest throughout game. Definitely helped with fresh legs on the late three. Depth is starting to be a weapon if he will keep substituting throughout game.

On that note, in the postgame radio interview Mooney said he meant to play Wojcik in the second half......totally agree that improved depth, meaning more rest for starters, is paying dividends.

I’ve always wondered if Mooney’s “I forgot to play him” is coach speak so the kid doesn’t think he’s in the dog house/unwanted or if he actually forgets to play people.
