Burke Smith - 2020 Offer

Given who we are competing with, this guy sounds like a winner, with a capital "W." If the Ivies are interested and if Davidson is interested, we should be bringing him in as soon as we can and trying to lock in an offer (and acceptance). He appears to have the academics, the offers, the outside shot and likely enough athleticism to be a "no-brainer" offer... Nice brief video too.

I know nothing about this kid other than what's in this thread, so this comment is about the attitude both on this board at times and in our program and not about this kid.

Saying he is a a " no brainer" based on the offers he has seems sorta (OK - - totally) silly to me. We are better program than every single school on that list (even considering last year) save maybe Davidson and Yale (very recently) with whom we are perhaps on par and I would hope we aspire to be better than all these programs and certainly better than we have been for the last 6-7 years. So it tough for me to see how recruiting kids that have lists like that is going to move the needle.

Again, I know nothing of the kids game and if this was the sorta kid we got after we exhausted other avenues (instead of a Diekvoss) as the last guy to fill out a class etc., I'd be ok with it and that may very well be why we are on him, but this is not the sort of profile we should be really shooting for and considering a "no-brainer" and rushing to offer IMHO. And if it is, then what you see is what you are going to get from the program going forward and I just don't want to accept that level of continued mediocrity and it seems as if perhaps the program (and certainly many on this board) ARE willing to accept that and that's frustrating to me as a fan!

One might point out that Burke is in the class of 2020; these guys generally are not recruited until next year. Teams are now recruiting for the 2019 class. One might recall that the Spiders offered Javin Delaurier a year early and he ended up with a number of offers and committed to Duke. The same is true for a number of recruits who we recognised their talent early on. So by this time next year, Burke could very well “blow up” just like Javin and countless others have.

I would neither crown this kid nor pan him. He’s collecting decent offers given he just closed his sophomore year. We have not done well getting in late on guys where we are an “equivalent” option. We have to be in early and hope we are guessing right. It’s natural for the top schools to wait, they don’t need to offer early to get interest. We do.

Given that we signed the bulk of our 2018 class in the Spring of 2018, I'm not going to put too much stock in anything for the year 2020. No one heard one peep about any of our 2018 signees until like a week before we signed them.

My general rule of thumb is that if we talk about them on this board, they ain't coming here.

Seen kid play. He's played alongside Bacot, Coleman, and last year that guard that went to ODU at Trinity. Saw him last summer and I can tell you he's way better in AAU where he's a primary focal point. Has actually has an inside game and can also handle the ball. Reminds me of Frank Kaminsky in high school. Name me another 6'11 that can go inside out that's RIGHT HERE IN RICHMOND. Telling you, kid is gonna be very good and Richmond shouldn't drag their feet. If you do a Google search there's a decent highlight clip. At the end, there is footage from camp versus high school. Dude be dribbling it up the floor, dropping 3's, euro steps.

LAS VEGAS -- From his playing days, Wisconsin assistant coach Dean Oliverhas made all sorts of connections throughout the country. One of those relationships happens to be with Garner Road Team Richmond head coach Del Harris.

So when Harris called up Oliver telling he to check out class of 2020 power forward Burke Smith, who draws parallels to former UW All-American and National Player of the Year Frank Kaminsky, the Badgers have been able to get a jump on recruiting a potential hidden gem.

"It's nothing serious yet, but they talked to my dad," Smith told Badger247. "Just a little of interest so far. We'll see next year."

Smith has an offer from Columbia. Rice, William & Mary, Davison, George Washington, George Mason, Cornell, Brown, Princeton, and others are expressing interest.
