Beware Hampton

From tonight's game notes:
SPIDERS COACH CHRIS MOONEY
15th season at Richmond
W-L at RICHMOND: ........ 256*-216
W-L in DIVISION I: ............274-228
W-L vs OPPONENT: ....................0-0
* Most in Richmond history

2 mistakes:
He is definitely not 0-0 against Hampton
There is no asterisk next to 216 losses

Problem down there before was that "the Pirates" were able to score after the end of the game and somehow the refs thought that was okay.

Is this a bullpen game?
For sure. I'd start Grace, Verbinskis, Sal, Wojcik and Gaitley, then cobble things together to get through the first half. After that, bring in some more walk-on help and see what we can do.

we looked passive offensively in the first half last game. it didn't flow without Grant.

once Gilyard got aggressive it was a different game. want to see that from the start tonight. can't just be a floor general with Grant out. let's push it.

Getting hosed on the road with 2 starters out would not be good. But somehow, I have confidence.

Up by 4 at half. Missed all but the last minute of the first half. It's on ESPN+

Nice to see UR take care of business in first true road game and without 2 starters in Cayo and Grant. We really have a dynamic backcourt in Gilyard and Francis, and you can even throw in Sherod as well. They carried the team last night.
Only negative is this game is that it highlighted again our lack of depth. We think we have depth, but there is a noticeable drop off once bench guys start playing. At this point - I think your looking at a 7 man rotation when Cayo and Grant are healthy - with Burton and Gustav being 6th and 7th man. Grace is just not there yet against good competition. Wojcik is hit or miss, and so far this season has been mostly miss. And Sal probably plays by default because we have to give Grant some sort of rest, especially with his ankle injuries now. But I think if this lack of quality play off the bench continues - look for a 7 man rotation come A10 play with an 8th man getting 5 or less minutes.
I think we can win with that formula, but we need everyone to stay healthy. Especially Grant and Cayo.

Trap, I completely disagree. The magic of what we are doing is building depth. Players need minutes to get better. Mooney is really dedicating time to the bench this year, and that is a big difference over the last couple of years. I think we go 9-10 deep in A 10 play.

It sticks out if you only get 12 minutes of game time and you fail to do something noticeable with those 12 minutes. But they are very valuable minutes toward the player's development.

Trap doesn't understand basic math 9/10 player rotation-2 players hurt=7/8 players. If Burton/Sal were better than GG/NC, then they would be starting.

Probably doesn't understand why we didn't call up any one from AAA to fill out roster.

I agree 100% Fan - in the past Mooney has done a poor job of "finding minutes" to get players experience and get them better.

I think to this point - he has done a good job of this, as he has played 8-9 guys in most games, even if some guys only got 5 minutes. But also remember - right now, this is easy to do because our competition has been so weak. Look at the Wisconsin game - Grace got 4 minutes and Wojcik got 5. Then in Auburn game - Wojcik 4 and Grace 2.

I see those two guys right now as the odd men out when it comes to league play and not only do we need to win games for a possible NCAA bid, but Mooney will also be thinking about his future employment. I don't fault him - you got to play the guys who will win the game for you, and right now - through 8 games, it is pretty evident off the bench you got Burton and Gustav and Sal will play limited minutes depending on matchups, and how Golden and Cayo are doing in terms of fouls and fatigue. I could even see Burton's minutes increase at times when we play more athletic teams and your looking at a lineup with Burton and Cayo as our bigs for just a few minutes to give Golden a rest.

Sounds reasonable. In games against top 50 opponents or in games that are too close to call late, I think you have a "meaningful 8." The starting 5, then Burton, Koureissei and Gustavson, all playing meaningful minutes, with Wojick and Grace getting a few minutes here and there.

In non top 50 contests or blow out games I think you see more of the 10 man rotation we have been seeing.

I would agree that we do have more depth, but I am seeing certain players off bench having better games than others but
not consistent game in, game out. Honestly I think Gus is the only sub who is giving us steady play off the bench. Burton and
Sal against Hampton did not have their best games, while Grace had more minutes and one of his best games. Woj was hustling and did rebound but his offensive output is still missing.

We need about 15 points or more from our bench to be a top notch team assuming our starters are meeting their point average. Another factor for any player is that when you are getting just a few minutes on the court you are not getting into the full rhythm of the game and typically your scoring production is going to be limited. These easy inside stickbacks and layups we are missing is keeping our bench point production down.
