Listened to the replay of the Behind the Web with Mooney, Gilly and Grant. What struck me was the comment around the 1 hour mark by Mooney that the team just cares about those positive people like
at World of Beer and in the stands. Well excuse me, I am passionate about the Spiders and I do believe in the players and appreciate them, but the record speaks for itself and there is no ignoring it. Negative comments can be fuel for improvement now and in the future, which is a positive thing. Coach Mooney I love Richmond and I want only the best for the players and the fans, even if it means facing the truth about the current program.

I heard that last night...thought it was poor of mooney not to take ownership and acknowledge fan frustration vs turning it around.

I’m listening now. Here’s the link for those also wanting to listen in.

If you can stand the Black and Mooney puke stuff long enough to get to Gilly, take a listen. He didn’t even hear Black’s stupid ass question and almost fell asleep. It’s hilarious

Well Mooney must only feed the players nothing but positive feedback which explains the loyalty. Constructive criticism is what teams are built on.

I missed that part but heard enough of the show to know that it seems like the train has left all the station for this year. Grant and Gilly say all of the right words, but they are completely devoid of any type of emotion, kind of like the head man who they have been studying under for the past forever.

If either of them end up in coaching someday, hopefully they'll run as fast as they can away from his coaching techniques.

Listened to the last few minutes and the comments by mooney and can’t believe what I heard. Talking about “mean people on social media” and not caring about a chip on the shoulder. That attitude is exactly why we are where we are. He should be pissed that we finished 6th with the expectations we had but he isn’t. Sounds to me like someone who knows he doesn’t have to worry about his job.

I just want a coach/program feel that says “shit, we’ve really fallen flat this year and we know that’s not acceptable. We are going to work our ass off to rectify that and win the fans back that we’ve disappointed.”

Or in other words, just some accountability. At this point, second to watching the same basketball flaws on the court from his teams, the frustrating part is the smoke Mooney blows (or tries to blow) up people’s asses.

Yes, that is the thing, following some other programs - their coaches do feel disappointed and do not accept losing as easily as Mooney.

Watching the Delaware game last night, announcers mentioned the UD coach focused on toughness all week leading into the CAA tourney. They even stated that he met with each player individually to talk to them about the importance of rebounding. Again, this seems to be something that is expected of athletic players only in our hoops regime.

Everything is rosy...the new fans who don't actually care about hoops and are willing to spend $5 on a ticket are in place.

This is a stick in the eye to those who think that Mooney is going to be fired. The latest justification for keeping Mooney has just been dropped and it wasn't done by accident.

ticket sales and attendance based on promises that were not kept. False advertising. Let’s see how many fans will trust next year’s marketing story.

A friend told me the other day that he got 6 tickets to each of the last 2 home games for $30 total because of deals and giveaways. A per/ticket cost of $2.50. Utterly pathetic.

I'd love to know how our overall ticket revenue this year compares to prior years.

Exactly - we take the minor league approach to ticket sales, and if the number of tickets is all that matters - then yes - it is successful.

But just look down the road - literally a 10 minute drive away, same conference, so basically same opponents. They get about 7000 fans a night and they charge I think $40 for a standing room only ticket. I am sure they run promotions - but you are not getting in the VCU doors for under $20 a ticket.

But I agree - this story was strategically placed. No way they get rid of him. They might not give an extension - but they will keep him.

That would be the real story. The longer this crap goes on the more I'm beginning to realize that this generation of administrators at my school are slick con artists. I was going to say used car salesmen but didn't want to disparage that profession compared to these guys.

We take that approach because Bob black was involved in minor league baseball for so long. Blame him.

Wrong, he’ll be let go after this year. I’m confident in that. Everyone has to stay positive for now, of course our athletics department is going to celebrate the all conference players and everything positive with the program. I think some on the board will be very pleasantly surprised

Again I have no actual insights into the AD’s plans at the end of the season, just my opinion. I think him/PQ are not as apathetic as some think. We’ll see I guess

They are not going to fire the winningest coach in school history after a 20-win season. I'll bet a pound of crow on it.

If Mooney made the decision himself, that is a different story. But, there is no indication that he is retiring on his own accord.

Yeah, our athletic department is not that strategic. They are going to pump out media fluff pieces because that is what they are paid to do. Our attendance was strong this year, but as others have said, I bet when you look at the bottom line, things look a bit different. Fluffing out free tickets to any kid under the age of 13 is gonna get people to come to games, regardless of product and that is what we have done. What else can they do, honestly, the product they are selling is largely worthless, so give it away for free and people will gladly take it.

Families need to reevaluate going to Richmond Squirrels games. Spiders are much cheaper outing for entertainment. And the halftime Spider entertainment rivals promotions that the Squirrels do.

As far as quality of play comparison, that's another discussion.

Let them celebrate finishing regular season 6th place.

agree 100%...not a conspiracy theorist but the timing of this news seems intentional to draw attention away from the disappointing season and begin laying the ground work for the post season announcement...

wish they'd just give Coach Mooney a "vote of confidence" and get it over with rather than play thinly veiled games with fans and the public...

Sad!

The UR fans were there to see the best team ever. We paid in advance and were duped. After the first half of the year, we attended just to get out of the house and pretend to wear a mask while we sipped our large soda.

Homer, I sadly agree. They just don’t have enough reasons to fire him and the easy path will be to keep him. 7-23 is all we will have (which should be enough). All we can hope for is no extension. The next two years will be horrible and maybe then they will can him.

The only hope is UR loses first round to Duquesne and gets no NIT bid.

OR - UR beats Duquesne, but then gets humiliated by 25+ points in a loss to VCU. And no NIT bid.

These are the only hopes right now if your looking to move on from Mooney, otherwise - I think he comes back.

We will all know the final outcome in probably a week, until then I am choosing to live in my happy space that we are moving on from Mooney. I have an entire offseason to be bitter if he is back, don't steal my hope.

Lol. Ok. Here’s to Hardt growing a pair!!

Hardt grows a pair and fires him. SpiderK gets excited. Then next week they announce new coach - Nathan Davis........and all hope is lost.
Actually, I would find this hilarious. Freaking ultimate troll job by Hardt and PQ sticking it to us and rubbing our noses in it. I do feel like if somehow Mooney is gone, Hardt is going to botch the hell out of this hire.
