A Loss for UR Spider Fans

STIERS, Fletcher Jr., 91, of Richmond, Va., died on April 22, 2018. The son of Fletcher Stiers and Edna Arlene Hollingsworth Stiers, he was preceded in death by his parents; and his beloved wife, Anna Eliza Dinwiddie Stiers. He graduated from the University of Richmond in 1948 and went on to build a successful career at the Central National Bank, 1948 to 1972, then subsequently, held the position of Deputy Director at the Virginia State Education Assistance Authority until his retirement in 1990. Fletcher was a passionate supporter of the University of Richmond, in particular, its Athletic Department. As a founding member of the UR Spider Club in 1950, he went on to serve five terms on its Board of Directors. He also dedicated his time to the UR Athletic Council, the Ambassador Program, and Past Presidents Council to name a few of his UR endeavors. He was particularly proud to receive the UR Volunteer of the Year Award in 1989 and 1998. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of his college graduation, he presented to his beloved university the UR Sports Hall of Fame Room. In 2004, Fletcher was honored to receive from Dr. Wm. E. Cooper, UR President, a Presidential Citation. An avid reader and history buff, Fletcher was a regular book reviewer for the Richmond News Leader during the 1950s. He was a member of The Boatwright Society and Friends of the Boatwright Library, as well as, a patron of the Virginia Historical Society, Historic Richmond Foundation, RVA Confederate Museum, Poe Museum, and the Chesterfield and Bon Air Historical Societies. Fletcher and Anna shared a love of travel and collecting antiques. He was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs! Go Cubbies! Fletcher lived a full and adventurous life and will be greatly missed by us all. He is survived by a number of cousins. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 28, in Westhampton Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the University of Richmond, Athletic Department in his memory.

One of the finest -- we'll miss him
 
Didn't have the pleasure of knowing him but I recognize him from some past UR sports events. Thank you for your efforts with UR. RIP Mr. Stiers.
 
what a great SPID and saw and spoke with him so often and he will be missed by so many, rest in peace buddy
 
Thanks for this thread - have known Fletcher since 1968 when he worked at Central National Bank and I was a bank examiner. Saw him after that at many Richmond sporting events and had numerous opportunities to talk with him. What a fine man and fun to be around - a very positive person who said many kind things................may eternity being blissful peace.................
 
Fletcher left his entire estate to the University of Richmond - he literally loved the school, all the friendships he made because of the school, and what his Richmond education meant to him.
