ready for a big Homecoming celebration?...wouldn't it be something if this game kept alive the Spiders chances in the CAA?...it's possible a big celebration may be in order!

for years the Wildcats had an incredible CAA and FCS Playoff run...led by legendary coach Sean McDonnell New Hampshire made the FCS Playoffs 14 years in a row (2004-2017), but all good things ultimately come to an end...the string ended in 2018...

just like the Spiders, New Hampshire has not been a serious factor in the CAA Championship battle since 2018...they may have hit rock bottom last season going 3-8, 2-6 CAA...

Coach McDonnell is gone and former star Cats QB Rick Santos is heading up the rebuilding effort...the Wildcats were picked to finish 9th in the CAA preseason poll...that just looks kind of weird...

but this does seem like the perfect year to for a UR twofer...1) defeat New Hampshire in RVA for the first time since 2007 and 2) satisfy the Homecoming crowd with a win that keeps Spiders CAA hopes alive!

enjoy Episode Nine of the Countdown in full at the link...

Go Spiders!

Max Brosmer hasn't played for the University of New Hampshire football team since March 2021, his return will give a boost to the Wildcats offense.

The UNH offense

Max Brosmer is back, three years later, to build off a true freshman season in 2019 when he led the team to a 6-5 record while starting the last 10 games.

After the 2020 season was lost to the COVID-19 pandemic, Brosmer started in a loss to UAlbany in what became a one-game season in the spring of 2021. He suffered a knee injury in preseason camp last year and missed the season.

Brosmer likes how far the offense has come so far.

"We're rolling right now," he said. "It's a new look and a new feel and I'm very excited to showcase it on Thursday. Not going to reveal too much. Going to stick with that. Pretty excited to get out there with the guys."

Santos has made it clear the Wildcats want to get the running game established early to utilize the talents of junior running back Dylan Laube, who led the CAA in all-purpose yards last year, and sophomore Isaac Seide.

Seniors Espanet and Sean Coyne and junior Charlies Briscoe III are listed as the starting receivers and junior Kyle Lepkowski is at tight end and. The group seems deep with redshirt freshman Joey Corcoran, grad transfers Heron Maurisseau and Andrew Edgar and freshman DJ Linkinsamong the weapons as pass catchers.

Juniors Osho Omoyeni at center and David Perry Jr. and Matt O'Neill at the guard spots with sophomore Dylan Poirier at right tackle join Flynn on the offensive line.

The Defense

Kvietkus at defensive tackle and Silver at one of the end spots are two of the keys on defense. Redshirt freshman Dylan Ruizis listed as the other starter at end and sophomore Neil Politano is at defensive tackle. Grad student Pierce DeVaughn, a transfer from UConn, will be a factor at end as well.

"Any time I see No. 9 (Kvietkus), No. 8 (Silver), all those guys up front, that's music to my ears," said Bush, the strong safety. "I know they're going to make plays. It' going to make our job easier on the back end. Instead of us having to blitz to get pressure, we can send our four guys in. That's more people in coverage, less time for the quarterback. They have to think about what Josiah's doing, what Niko's doing."

Led by Silver (he led the league in sacks with 12.5) the Wildcats were tied for second-best in the league with 31 total sacks last year. Silver was tied for tops in the league with six forced fumbles.

Linebacking might be strength of the entire team, even with sophomore Oleh Manzyk still sidelined by injury.

Junior Bryce Shaw and sophomore Ryan Toscano are listed as the starters and sophomore Zedane Williams and redshirt freshmen Brandon Perkins and Max Tillett will all be in the mix.

Santos is excited about how the defensive backfield is developing with Bush and junior Max Oxendine back from injury at safety spots with sophomore Noah Stansbury and junior Randall Harris at the corners.

Stansbury moved from safety to corner and has been impressive.

"He's made a ton of plays," Santos said. "It's tough to throw and catch on him right now."

Stansbury led the team with three interceptions last year and Bush and Harris each had a couple.

“…FedEx Ground FCS National Special Teams Player of the Week

Sean Lehane, New Hampshire, P, So., 6-0, 210 (Milford, Mass./Milford)

Lehane’s lethal punting helped New Hampshire to a 40-22 victory over Elon in a matchup of nationally ranked CAA Football teams. He dropped four of his five punts inside Elon’s 10-yard line to be downed at the 1 twice as well as the 4 and the 7. The punt to the 4 led to a safety for the Wildcats. He averaged 44.8 yards per punt, including 56- and 53-yarders…”

Their DEs are very good. UNH leads league in sacks at 26. Spids 3rd at 23. DEs on both teams can be a difference maker. Hope we have Marlem back.

Give us the nod with Udinski's quick release. Gonna be a hell of a game. GO Spiders!

Four former Spiders greats will be saluted Saturday on homecoming

”…During the New Hampshire game at Robins Stadium, saluted will be Walker Gillette (receiver, 1967-69), Buster O’Brien (quarterback, 1966-68), Pat Kelly (linebacker, 1971-73) and Earl “Buddy” Stoudt (back, 1958-60)…”

With their DEs expect UNH to follow Villanova game plan - try to pressure the QB, take away the short passes to the flat, and dare us to run. Hoping Savon and Howard are back to 100%. Or give it to Fonnae Webb who is 1 for 1 on carries.

Believe we are the better team, but gotta prove it Saturday.

I can live with getting beat, so long as we don't lose on bad coaching decisions.

CAA: No. 17 New Hampshire (6-2, 5-0) at No. 14 Richmond (6-2, 4-1)

Kickoff: 3:30 p.m. (FloSports/MASN)
Notable: UNH, the CAA leader, is coming off a bye. RB Dylan Laube’s 171.6 all-purpose yards per game rank third in the FCS. Richmond QB Reece Udinski’s 77.1 completion percentage (239 of 310) is better than the FCS single-season record (75.2, Northern Iowa’s Eric Sanders in 2007). He’s been dissecting opponents with the only FCS trio that has 40+ receptions each (WRs Jasiah Williams, Jakob Herres and Leroy Henley).
The Pick: Richmond
