the Pirates move into the CAA from the Big South Conference where they played after leaving the MEAC after the 2017 season...CAA preseason pollsters don't give HU much respect voting them to finish in last place in the preseason poll...

Coach Robert Prunty praises the CAA in his Media Day remarks and doesn't expect his squad to be intimidated...he has some talent returning on both sides of the ball, but will likely not know his QB until the week of his first game...there'll be a three way battle for the key position.

Prunty states that Hampton's defense needed to improve this year...he went out and hired a new defensive coordinator named Cosh...it's Chris Cosh, Spiders offensive coordinator Billy Cosh's brother...how's that for irony and intrigue...let's hope Chris can't slow down Billy's Air Raid scheme too much!

there's not much history between these two programs, but the 2015 FCS Playoff Spiders did squeak out a very tough 31-28 win at Hampton early in the season...this year's game is also the Pirates Homecoming game...I expect we will get their very best effort...but if the Spiders are going to make a run at the CAA Championship battle this is a road game that is an absolute must win...

enjoy Episode Seven of the Countdown...

Go Spiders!

Thanks for all the previews of games this season Mojo

Just one bit more information, Spiders did play Hampton in 2005 playoffs when Hampton was #2 seed and advanced with a 38-10 Spider victory. It was actually Hampton's only loss that season.

Remember as watched the game they might have been the fastest team Spiders played that year at the skill positions, but OL and DLs for Spiders played really well in second half and David Freeman and Tim Hightower scored a couple of times on short runs for Spiders to pull away after a close first half.

ncspider: Thanks for the reminder on the 2005 game. I don't recall it and missed it in my research. I know they gave us all we wanted down there in 2015. The game was scary and there was a weather delay during the game too. All fans were evacuated from the stands to what I think was the basketball arena.

10/15 game

Hampton 38, UAlbany 37 (ot)
Box Score

Malcolm Mays passed for 208 yards and four touchdowns as Hampton (4-2, 1-2 CAA) rallied past UAlbany (1-5, 0-3 CAA), 38-37 in overtime to earn its first-ever CAA victory.

UAlbany built a 24-10 halftime advantage after scoring twice in the final 1:13 of the second quarter on a 36-yard TD pass from Reese Poffenbarger to Roy Alexander and a 40-yard Hail Mary to tight end Thomas Greaney on the last play of the half. A 12-yard pass from Mays to Jadakis Bonds pulled the Pirates within seven in the third quarter, but Todd Sibley’s 5-yard run put UA ahead 31-17 with 14:56 left in regulation. Hampton battled back behind Mays, as he threw a 43-yard TD pass to Tyler Thompson and a 5-yard toss to Kymari Gray that tied the game at 31-31 with 5:09 left in the fourth quarter. After missing a field goal in the final seconds of regulation, Mays threw a 7-yard TD pass to Bonds in overtime to give the Pirates a 38-31 lead. UAlbany answered with a 15-yard scoring pass from Poffenbarger to Quinn Zinobile, but Hampton stopped the Great Danes’ two-point attempt.

Bonds finished with seven catches for 92 yards and 2 TD’s and Darran Butts rushed for 124 yards and a TD on 16 carries for the Pirates offense. KeShaun Moore had four tackles, 3.0 TFL’s and 2.0 sacks. For UAlbany, Poffenbarger was 26-of-35 passing for 337 yards and 4 TD’s, with Greaney making six receptions for 110 yards and 2 TD’s. Jackson Ambush had nine tackles and an interception for the Great Danes.

The Hampton playoff game in ‘05, as mentioned elsewhere on the board recently, was where Moo da chains was basically born for us. Their PA guy shouted it every time they got a first down, then we stole it. That was a fun and cold night. We took a close game and turned it into a blowout very quickly in the second half.
