yes, 2 spots. I'd like:
1) a big man immediately eligible grad transfer
2) a big man regular transfer

and there's a ton of competition for good big man transfers

Regardless of what happens, I hope we can keep Nelson, Wilson, Goose, Dji and Burton onboard. And I’d like to see what Crabtree can give us if he’s ever healthy, but I’m not counting on him right now. Beyond that, hire the right coach and much is possible quickly.

I hope not. I like the last few classes. don't want to lose any of them.

Agree, its just inevitable with a coaching change. Many guys choose Richmond for the coach and will likely want to explore new options. New coach has a style and his preference on players, and will likely prioritize trying to keep certain guys, and not try so hard or even dissuade certain guys. Just what happens with a coaching change.

Some current guys will look forward to a fresh face and approach, and more discipline possibly, and some guys will be upset at losing the culture of comfort that Mooney fostered.

Just the way it goes.

Right on 23. The fear factor that our school has when it comes to this is insane. Change happens! You’re even allowed to bring about some of it yourself once every SEVENTEEN GODDAMN YEARS. Imagine that!

Any of this incoming crew a lights out shooter?

What are we thinking the starting 5 looks like next year with the current expected roster?

Wilson, Goose, Burton, Sal, Grace? Those final two spots is where it seems we will be incredibly weak

Unless injury recovery is slow, I predict that Nelson will start next year.

Featuring Oumar Sylla at point guard and Mooney with no clue how to use Jermaine Bucknor and Kevin Steenberge. He’s been here that long. This reign of the king needs to end.
That was my sophomore year. He was working so hard to get them out of the run and Gun style of wainwright, it felt like every game was a practice. They weren’t allowed to fast break, and they had to run the offense for 20-25 seconds before looking for a shot.

It was some of the worst basketball I’ve ever watched. He had some talented players as you pointed out, but he tried to force his system on the players instead of fitting the system to the players.

It really was terrible basketball. Steenberges parents used to sit behind me and my friend and I got great color on that transition. Not pretty.

I believe Quentin & Gabe are walkons

While wainwright was not a delay and wait on offense like early Mooney, I’m not sure most call it a run and gun?

I agree. I like all those players and I do give CM credit for getting them here. That said, you can't manage the program out of fear of who may transfer if you need to make a change, no matter who they are. It's a ridiculous reason to retain a coach. No one player is bigger than the program. Find the right guy and those issues take care of themselves. And while some players may transfer, who is to say any of them will leave. Hire the right coach for Spider Basketball. Want a good example of hiring the right guy, look @ VT. Mike Young had one down year, then returned his team to the NCAA in year two....at VA Tech, not exactly a school with great basketabll history.

Tallied up some quick numbers on 2021 roster to see possible production returning (assuming the same as my original post)

2020 Overall Season Stats (74.95 team scoring avg)
  • Will lose 52 ppg out of 74.95 avg in 2020.
  • Of the 23 pts returning, Burton alone has 12.1 of the 23.
  • Losing 138 out of 200 minutes per game

Conference Season Stats (74.0 team scoring avg)
  • will lose 54.6 ppg out of 74 avg
  • Of the 19.4 pts returning, Burton owns 11.9. Rest of team is bringing 7.5 pts.
  • Losing 135.4 out of 200 mins per game

Yeah. It's time to blow it up

Well, perhaps we will be better on defense and only need to score 41ppg.

I think youre forgetting Mooney’s first team, when we had so few scoring options that we tried to keep the game in the 40s so we would have a chance to win.
Agreed, but I don’t blame him for coaching another guy’s recruits.

Agreed. Nelson is legit. Probably him with Wilson in the backcourt. Goose and Dji on one wing, Burton on the other, Sal and Grace mixing it up for time underneath.
Nothing against Eight Legger, I just feel that every year we pump up the incoming freshmen as being stars that can help lead us and it very rarely happens. Even as good as Burton was as a freshman, he still was not ready to give us consistent points each night. Dji hasn’t shown me anything because he hardly played. I don’t think Wilson has an outside shot. Big men are a mess. Wouldn’t you take Bucknor, Sulla, and Steenberge over this group?

I think I’ve told this story before on this board, but I will forever have a ton of respect for Bucknor...

Orientation my freshman year, playing ball at the gym, and 5 varsity players call next game. I get matched up with Bucknor. I was a 6’4” guard, played in high school/AAU, and thought I was hot shit. I get the ball on the wing, drive inside on Bucknor, and before I know it he’s going the other way with the ball and dunking.

He came back down as we’re bringing the ball up, nice as could be, and says genuinely “that was a good move, but you’ve got to tuck the ball in front of you when you drive and not leave it out wide.” I grumbled something and kept playing.

A couple plays later, same thing happened... I got the ball on the wing, jabbed baseline, drove middle, and all of a sudden Bucknor was going the other way for an off the backboard ally oop to Courtney Watson...

The rest of the game (that we definitely lost), I only passed... but I’ll never forget how cool it was that the team came to play pick up with us and how genuinely nice (and good) they were. Made me an instant fan and changed my perspective of just how good d-1 bball players are.

Yep , I am hopeful they are all shooters but don't have any stats to back it up, and a shooter in high school doesn't always translate to d1.

Jesse P. Was supposedly great shooter as was Julius.

But all 3 look to have some nice potential but look like wings to me. Need some bigs.

Speaking of shooting, what an absolutely horrible home record for this team of seniors who have spent the last 4/5 years shooting millions of shots and thousands of hours practicing on our court. They played like the never saw the place before.

It really was a home court disadvantage. I hope the new coach prioritizes winning at the RC. That's an easy way to keep a lot of fans happy. Also, don't lose home openers to anyone. And really don't lose them to Delaware. JMU. Longwood. What a hideous list that is.

I agree Rick, and how will that improve now that they will not even practice in the RC anymore?

I’m glad to have the practice facility but I said this b4 but u should never choose to team practice there if the RC is also available. Sherod also tore his acl at Queally center. It was not good luck at least in the inaugural season.

Spider10, if there was ever a time to learn how to box out, next year will be it. Yikes! No worries though, there's probably a big man grad transfer available from Chicago St.
