The Spiders opened this "snake bit" 2011 season against the struggling Blue Devils who this time were then led by new coach David Cutcliffe, who had been brought in to revive the program.

It was a time of uncertainty for Richmond too as we were being led by interim head coach Wayne Lineburg, who had replaced Latrell Scott just weeks before the season began.

I don't recall the odds makers read on this one, but I'm pretty sure Duke was the usual favorite as an ACC/BCS program taking on an FCS opponent.

They should have known better. UR had already defeated Duke twice on this field in 2006 and 2009. A healthy Aron Corp was back at QB for the Spiders and there was talented experience at crucial positions on offense and defense.

The Spider Gang had a great celebration and road trip to Durham, but there is no amateur video in the archives. This was the first of three magnificent Richmond wins that Satchmo has had to miss in the last ten years. He had tickets in pocket to attend each one.

The culprit this time was Hurricane Irene which had caused some significant damage in the household the weekend before this game.

But don't be forlorn Spiders fans, there are professional highlights from UR AD narrated by a younger Bob Black's play by play. They'll give you a replay of some strong memories and a special post game celebration. And as predicted, we have not appeared on Duke's schedule since this victory.

Sadly, this was the highlight of the 2011 season. Everything went downhill from this game. The Spiders played well in several games, but for some reason could not close out a win.

After winning three straight in non conference Richmond lost eight in a row, going an incredible 0-8 in the CAA. Only two seasons earlier the Spiders won a piece of the CAA Championship and were FCS National Championship contenders. How quickly things can change!

The Spiders lost CAA games to New Hampshire 43-45, Towson 28-31, Maine 22-23, W&M 23-25.

I hope these highlights bring back some good memories from the very disappointing season.
