I think when Marv Hubbard starred for these guys they were known as the Red Raiders, but not sure...

Spiders scheduled as another Homecoming opponent here...when will our opponents learn?...it may be the earliest Homecoming game I've seen...usually this type of weekend is more traditional for Parents weekend...

Regardless of how we do in Texas opening game, this should be a good road test for the Spiders...it's the type of game we're going to have to win on the road at places like Towson and Delaware to compete for a CAA Championship and FCS Playoff spot...

Raiders expected to be a solid Patriot League team, but probably not a contender for the Championship...

last season at The Brick House was an entertaining, but very tough win...

Enjoy the Countdown...

Go Spiders!

Afriyie Named Patriot Preseason Defensive POY
Paulish, Castillo, Daramy Also Named to Preseason Team; Raiders Picked Third

Patriot League Preseason Team Release
Patriot League Preseason Poll

HAMILTON –
Colgate's Pat Afriyie enters the 2017 season right where he left off in 2016: As the undisputed best defensive football player in the Patriot League.

Afriyie was tabbed the conference's Preseason Defensive Player of the Year in voting by the league coaches and sports information directors released Thursday. The senior defensive end finished last year as the Patriot League's top defensive player on his way to multiple All-America status.

"Pat represents not only everything you want your football player to be, he represents what I want my sons to become," Colgate head coach Dan Hunt said. "Pat exemplifies what you want in a human being. He works hard, he's never satisfied, he does whatever you ask him to do and he sees beyond that.

"He's not going to just be compliant and do what you ask him to do; he is committed and he always does more. He's a great student a great representative of this team and of Colgate."

Colgate as a team is picked for a third-place finish behind Lehigh and Fordham. The Raiders host those two teams in that order to begin Patriot League play Oct. 7 and 14.

"We are really excited for the start of the season," Hunt said. "We have a lot of positive things going on in our program right now. Over the summer, we installed a new playing surface at our stadium and we are just finishing up the final touches on about a $1.4 million locker room, meeting room and academic center renovation in our facility. That's been exciting.

"We've got the early start to the season out in California in August and we can't wait to get started. It should be fun."

Chasing Career Sacks Record
Afriyie last season posted 10 sacks for minus-83 yards and 21 tackles-for-loss for minus-108 yards, leading the Patriot League and finishing fourth nationally in both categories. He enters 2017 third on the Colgate career chart with 24 total sacks, just 4½ behind leader Kelly Robinson (1979-81).

It's the second year in a row that a Colgate Raider is the preseason pick for Defensive Player of the Year. Last season, Kyle Diener was the choice. Diener went on to lead the Raiders in tackles for a third straight season, finishing with 74 in 2016 and 332 for his career. Colgate with Afriyie and Diener leading the charge led the nation and set a program record for rushing defense with a 69.4-yard average.

Joining Afriyie on the 2017 Patriot League Football Preseason All-League Team are offensive lineman Ryan Paulish and defensive backs Tyler Castillo and Abu Daramy. Paulish last year was an All-Patriot League First Team pick, while Castillo made the Second Team and Daramy was the league's Rookie of the Year on his was to Hero Sports Freshman All-America status.

Colgate begins practice Monday as preparations get underway for the 2017 opener Aug. 26 at Cal Poly. Kickoff is 4 p.m. Pacific time (7 p.m. Eastern), with ESPNU carrying the telecast.

Hunt may give him free reign to do anything he wants. He's quick to the edge. He'll conventionally be lined up opposite our right side.Durden may be using our TE to neutralize him.

Raiders Cap Opening Week of Practice
Afriyie Named to Buck Buchanan Watch List for National Defensive Player of the Year

image_handler.aspx
HAMILTON –
Colgate capped its opening week of football practice Saturday with a two-hour workout on Crown Field at Andy Kerr Stadium.

The Raiders are exactly three weeks away from teeing it up against Cal Poly in a Week 0 matchup in front of an ESPNU national TV audience. Kickoff for the Aug. 26 intersectional contest is 4 p.m. Pacific time (7 p.m. Eastern).

Judging from the Saturday's postpractice comments, Colgate head coach Dan Hunt is liking what he has seen through six practices, the last two of which were in full pads.

"This team likes to play football," Hunt said. "Obviously, we're not where we want to be from an execution standpoint by any stretch – nor should we be – but the effort is there. These kids enjoy practice. When it's time to compete, they compete. And that gives you a chance to get where you want to go.

"If we can prepare with this effort for another three weeks, I like our chances."

List to the rest of Coach Hunt's comments below:.

Junior Tyler Castillo in the secondary and senior Ryan Paulishon the offensive line are two of the many Raiders who have seen their names listed among the preseason players to watch.

'Preseason Is Preseason'
Castillo and Paulish were picked by the conference head coaches for the Preseason All-Patriot League Team, joining Pat Afriyie and Abu Daramy-Swaray. For Castillo, it's all about making the plays when the whistle blows and the games begin for real.

"Preseason is preseason," Castillo said. "We still have to see how the season goes. I'm just excited to be back with the defense and back with the offense after putting in work over the summer.

"The defensive is flying around to the ball. Hopefully, we can get all 11 hats to the football each play. We're playing with a lot of intensity and a lot of speed. I'm hoping to keep that moving forward."

List to the rest of Castillo's comments below.

Paulish is one of three returning starters on the offensive line, joining Andy Simms and Max Hartzman. Paulish was an All-Patriot League First Team choice last season but has even higher hopes for this year's squad.

"You could really tell from everyone up here in the summer that we're really together," Paulish said. "We have a good team chemistry and we are excited to get this thing moving.

"After last season, we thought we were going to have a big one and it was kind of disappointing. But now we're ready and it's a new season. We're ready to get to work."

Afriyie Named to Buchanan Watch List
image_handler.aspx
Afriyie continues to accumulate plenty of preseason buzz. Friday he was named to the Buck Buchanan Watch List for FCS National Defensive Player of the Year after he finished 13th in voting for the award in 2016.

Offenses in the Patriot League have to alter their schemes when they face Afriyie. He's led the league in sacks and tackles for loss for two straight years, including 10 and 21, respectively, in 2016.

The senior earned Patriot League and ECAC Defensive Player of the Year awards last season and earned a second straight appearance on the All-Patriot League First Team.

Besides our game on ESPNU 7pm 8/27 and UTC vs JSU on ESPN 6:30pm 8/26,
Colgate vs Cap Poly is on ESPNU 7pm 8/26.

In case anyone wants to check them out before we see them...

I'm starting to put together my viewing schedule through Labor Day Weekend. Even if the CAA isn't putting together theirs...

So far Colgate has dominated Cal Poly...leading 20-0 late in the third...the portion of the game I have seen has shown both teams relying almost entirely on rushing to move the ball...

Raiders defense has stuffed Mustangs rushing attack including three 4th down stops...Cal Poly has been one of the top rushing attacks in all of FCS the last number of years...

our game with Colgate looks like it will be a good test of our offensive line versus the Raiders defensive line....

hope players and coaches are watching and will be ready...the Raider defense is impressive at least against the rush...

be ready...Go Spiders!

------------

QB for Cal Poly would be 5th on our depth chart.

Cal Poly stopped on 4th down-3 times early in the game.Twice inside their own 50 yd line(45,35).

Gate QB calls his own plays and uses read option. Can't remember if he ever ran with ball on a keeper.

Play calling and clock management by Cal Poly in the last 5 minutes was awful.

= 5:35 4th | Three-and-out for Colgate. Colgate punts to the Cal Poly 31.

= 0:37 4th | ColGate breaks up pass. Cal Poly turns it over on downs at the Colgate 22.

20-14 should have been 20-21.

Colgate now 1-0 and next game their Homecoming.

Can't take them lightly, they will be battle hardened after beating a ranked team away in a close game, and probably have a second win under their beLt too. The Spiders on the other hand will be sick of practicing and may have a difficult time focusing. You folks who already have this in the win column might want to remember Gardner Webb and Rhode Island just a few years ago.

Defense for Colgate played great. Don't know how good Cal-Poly is supposed to be - but they only scored 14 points, all in the fourth quarter. Offensive line did a decent job, too. We better be ready to win this one in the trenches.

Football Notes: Raiders Next Foe Playing Friday
Richmond Taking on Sam Houston St. at Baylor; Hunt, Holl Keyed Colgate D at Cal Poly

HAMILTON – Colgate's Homecoming opponent, Richmond, is playing its opening game after all.

The No. 7-ranked Spiders were set to visit No. 3 Sam Houston State this past Sunday night before Hurricane Harvey intervened and forced a postponement in rain-soaked Huntsville, Texas. But both teams have an open date this week and the game is now set for Friday night in Waco at Baylor's McLean Stadium.

No doubt the Colgate coaching staff and players will be interested viewers in that 7 p.m. Eastern time kickoff streaming live on ESPN3 and WatchESPN.

The Raiders are coming off a thrilling 20-14 win at No. 23 Cal Poly and are idle this week. Kickoff Sept. 9 against Richmond is set for 1 p.m. on Crown Field at Andy Kerr Stadium.

Hunt Spreads the Love
Ben Hunt IV credits a total team effort for Colgate's defensive showing against No. 23 Cal Poly. The Mustangs entered as the four-time defending NCAA rushing leaders but were held to 210 rushing yards on 62 attempts. Last season, Cal Poly averaged 343.5.

For his efforts, Hunt was named NCAA.com FCS Defensive Player of the Week.

image_handler.aspx
"We came out with a lot of energy on defense and on offense," Hunt said. "I want to give a shoutout to T.J. Hollbecause he had 16 tackles. John Steffen, Chuck Moore, Caleb Fell, Pat (Afriyie) – the whole defense balled out, so it wasn't just me."

Hunt did more than his share. He posted a career-high nine tackles and led all defenders on both teams with two tackles for loss. Hunt also caused and recovered the first fumble of the 2017 season, leading to a Colgate TD five plays later.

Listen to the rest of Hunt's comments HERE.

Holl on the Spot
Holl was in the right place at the right time most of Saturday night, halting 16 Cal Poly ball carriers from his inside linebacker post to set a personal career high.

Going into the game, we knew they ran the triple option and we knew they were No. 1 in the country the last couple of years in rushing attack, so we expected them to run the ball a lot," Holl said. "They ran the ball 62 times, so we got our fair share of opportunities against their run game. "Coach Shaff (Paul Shaffner) preached all week that the first guy we needed to stop was their fullback (Joe Protheroe), especially at the inside linebacker position. They gave him the ball 40 times (39 carries for 139 yards), so we got a lot of opportunities." Listen to the rest of Holl's comments HERE.

Puzzi Puts Them Through
Chris Puzzi is no stranger to the playing field, having handled Colgate's kickoff duties last season. But the sophomore won the placekicking position after Jonah Bowman's graduation and began that portion of his collegiate career 2-of-2 on both field goals and extra points Saturday at Cal Poly.

"The first one, I just wanted to put it through," Puzzi said of his 27-yarder to open the scoring. "The second one (35 yards), I was a little more confident and just wanted to do my job."

Part of Puzzi's preparation for kicks is anticipating what the coaching staff might do – go for it on fourth down or send in the field goal unit.

"I pretty much have a sense of when we're going to go for it," he said. "Obviously I want to be ready every time, but you kind of get to know your range. My range is going to expand as I get more confident."

Listen to the rest of Puzzi's comments HERE.

Vote! Vote! Vote!
Holl and Puzzi are in the running for Hero Sports FCS Defensive/Special Teams Hero of the Week. As of Wednesday night, Holl had a slim lead over Jacksonville State's Jonathan Hagler. Vote HERE, Raider Nation!

The winner is announced Friday.

Mathews Earns Top 10 PlayThe Alex Mathews 57-yard touchdown run that gave Colgate a 17-0 halftime lead Saturday at Cal Poly was selected as an NCAA FCS Top 10 Play. Congratulations, Alex!

Despite this being an away game, I see UR winning by more than 14. We have a fantastic offense and which will score points. Look for Colgate to run a lot and pound the line. I also think they will blitz frequently to pressure Kyle. Defense will be challenged. Mistakes on special teams will be addressed.

UR -2.5 O/U 49

Implied score: 26-23

Seems reasonable. I think our defense matches up better with Gate than it did with Sammy. I also expect Kyle to have another bid day through the air. Running may be tougher sledding this week

The Patriot League football Corvias Players of the Week are selected in a vote by League media members and each individual programs sports information director, who are not eligible to vote for their own student-athletes.

Corvias Defensive Player of the Week
T.J. Holl, Colgate, Jr., LB, Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley
T.J. Holl led Colgate with 16 tackles in a 20-14 victory over then No. 23 Cal Poly, last Saturday. Holl and the Raiders defense held became the first team to hold the Mustangs scoreless at halftime since 1998. He also helped the Colgate defense hold last year’s FCS team rushing leaders to 210 yards, over 100 yards under last year’s season average.

Corvias Special Teams Player of the Week
Chris Puzzi, Colgate, So., PK, Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain
Puzzi was a perfect 2-for-2 on field goal attempts with a long of 35 yards and 2-for-2 on extra points in the Raiders 20-14 win against No. 23 Cal Poly. The sophomore placekicker also averaged 62.0 yards per kickoff with one touchdown.

Honorable Mention

James Holland, Colgate, Jr., RB, Royal Palm Beach, Fla./Kings Academy
Holland rushed for 91 yards on 20 carries and a 17-yard touchdown run to help the Raiders defeat No. 23 Cal Poly last Saturday evening. The senior running back’s touchdown was the 20th of his career. He was making his return to action after missing the last seven games of the 2016 season with an injury.

I know it is mentioned a decent amount on the board, but it is always impressive how humble, hard-working, and well-spoken our guys are.
URWilk, agree 100%. Proud of our guys. True student/athletes who will be successful in whatever they do.

I agree 100% on the players, I do hope Coach is a little more fired up about fixing the obvious problems we had against SHSU with the players. Early in the year but beating Colgate is very important

Some of you guys don't get it. Folks like FRS keep this message board from being boring, whether we agree or not. Different personalities, good or bad, are good for us. Who would we poke if we didn't have FRS, VCU trolls, or the like?

I thought, when I was about 5 or 6 years of age, that Yale University was the maker of Yale locks!
