Trying to make sense of our next opponent. 2-6 record with unimpressive losses sometimes by large margins. But then there's a 22 point victory over Stanford, who in turn has close losses to Michigan and a 2OT loss to #20 Arkansas.

this is what December football is all about...two really good teams that deserve to play in game like this...despite what the oddsmakers and pundits say I believe the two teams are pretty evenly matched on both sides of the ball...

if both play well this should be an outstanding game that could be decided by the intangibles...I like what the Spiders have going...no matter the opponent, or what adversity they've been faced with since September, they've found a way to overcome it and win...I don't think they're ready to stop in upstate NY...

Spiders Playoff history includes some giant underdog, road Playoff wins...those teams were special...I think this team still has something to prove and can join those teams Saturday!

There's a diverse range of opinions about our team's performance, but one impartial method to assess our standing is through the NET computer ranking and Kenpom. Presently, we hold the 86th spot overall and 4th in the A10, surpassing preseason expectations. Additionally, once Hunt returns we should be better, possibly reaching peak form by the A10 tournament. What would you consider a successful ranking by the end of the season?

CAA is already huge and Bryant is coming in next year, so there's no real need to backfill UD's spot, but it's not good to keep losing teams from the top and adding at the bottom. Such is the pecking order though.

Spiders taking on Queens in the 2nd half of the 2nd Spiders football/basketball double header this month. Spiders will win 81-63. I will be watching from the great north in Montreal where we will be for Thanksgiving weekend so will sadly be disappointing LongIslandSpider once again,

Mooney said a few very interesting and encouraging things in the post-game interview. In addition to complimenting the leading player of the game, he also mentioned:

1. Mikkel Tyne is terrific on defense and has the potential to be one of the best defensive players he has coached. He also stated that he feels Tyne will be much better on offense once he gets used to the speed of the game.

2. Aidan Noyes – Mooney is very high on him and mentioned that he will be a big contributor on offense as he gets more playing time

3. Jason Roche – He has no worries about Jason’s recent shooting and says he adds a lot of value on the court in addition to scoring.

If these 3 start contributing in a bigger way, we are going to be a difficult team to beat.

5 Ja'Vion Griffin, "Mr. Circus", going back to his one handed catch last home game, he continued yesterday, ripping one from the defender and catching another miracle later.
4 Jerry Garcia, Jr. two of catches yesterday were due to his focus and persistence. One in the hands of the defender and Jerry refused to give up s the ball was bobbled he gabbed it and went for the TD; another was a pass to him that was slightly off, he bobbled it, but stayed with it for the catch.

A number of people have said we are not a good 3 point shooting team, but the data through 5 games of people with 4 or more attempts is the opposite. The team average would be a lot higher if Mikkel hadn't taken so many shots. Even with all Roche's recent misses his percentage made isn't that bad. We will see a number of these high percentages come down, but it is a very strong start.

Our women’s team is off to a solid start. Team appears to have what it takes to win the league. To Mr.Hardt and staff - How about doing more than same old (almost no advertisement) of this team. A suggestion - market and sell $75 reserved seating and $40 General Admission for January to March home games. Let’s build a tradition for women’s basketball at UR. And to Spidernation friends, let’s all make an effort to attend.

take your pick from this "four pack" of amateur, selected Spiders highlights from yesterday's giant win over the Eagles...when things looked bleak late in the first half our defense took over the game...our offense and special teams took advantage of the failing Central offense to go from 7-20 to 35-20 early in the 4th quarter...it was a remarkable turnaround!

selected rushing highlights here...Savon Smith another workhorse game with the go ahead TD early in the third quarter is featured...it looked to me line our offensive line began to wear down the Eagles defense in the 2nd half...our rushing attack with Smith and Wickersham has balanced the offense making the vertical game even more dangerous...I like Fonnae Webb...his electric run is a selected highlight despite the fumble...it looks to me like he hits the hole quicker than any other running back...he's shown he can break a big one at any time: Login to view embedded media
finally selected highlights from our special teams...Smith's 65 yard punt return (sadly not featured) gave us some much need breathing room...he also handled his fair catches flawlessly, several into a very difficult sun field...Trussler was Trussler all day...the powerful NCCU punt return team turned in negative 4 yards...Lopez was 7/7... and McManus helped our kick coverage team hold the eagles to only 58 yards on 8 kickoffs!...these guys will go to UAlbany on a roll: Login to view embedded media
What a incredible day at The Brick House! As the probable last home game for this team, they saved the best for last...but as they move on to an even bigger game in Albany Saturday I expect their play to match the challenge...it should be another great CAA battle...

Last year and during the first two games of the season, a majority of board members wanted Neal to adopt a more aggressive scoring approach. However, he only attempted one shot against VMI and merely four against Siena. Since then, he has had 20 or more points in three out of the last four games, including against Boston College and UNLV, and has been making about 2/3 of his shots. He also ranks 9th in the league in assist to turnovers.

Equally impressive has been his defensive performance, notably as a dominant force under the rim. In previous years, numerous drives to the basket would have resulted in scores, but due to his size, they now often end up as passes to teammates. In the past four games, he has twice blocked four shots, not including the last game where I saw many blocks, although the official statistician credited him with only one.

Not sure about what TJ and Grant taught him over the summer, but whatever it was, it appears to be yielding positive results.

Strengths
Big, Strong, fairly athletic - Walz has the size and strength to impact the game. Looks more athletic than Quinn.
Passing? Very limited time, but had three assist vs Loyola, and seems to see the court well.
Intelligence. Very well spoken, as noted seems to see the game and have some basketball IQ. Does it translate into game speed when he gets more opportunity? That is the question. Or when does it translate may be a better question.
Needs improvement
Again, with such limited game time it is hard to know.
Urgency - From the couple of interviews, he seems to come in content to play the back up role, and develop and adjust while waiting his turn. Would like him to have more of a play now attitude. He has a good attitude, but I would like a more aggressive, get on the court attitude.
Offense - from h.s. he appears to have some skill level, but - again in limited time - so far have not seen much in the way of looking to score. Appears to have good form at FT line, and decent touch for being so big and strong.
Overview
I would like to see him force his way into the game more, and when he is in there have an impact. I think defense and rebounding are the obvious ways - but he has a year under his belt - time to impose your will on offense too when the minutes come. As a disclaimer, the route he is taking worked well with with big men in the past - particularly with Tarrant - with guys developing for a few years, and then having really good years as juniors and seniors. If we do not see minutes or production this year, at least we can hope that is the case, and maybe helps keep him here instead of the portal. Not sure what the offseason plan is/was with Walz, but I think he is a guy that would really benefit from those runs someone posted about on here. I think he mainly needs time playing against college guys in a competitive atmosphere. More so than just skill work, strength and conditioning. Hopefully that is happening this summer. I think he has a bright future, he is a P6 sized/athletic big man waiting to happen, but when?
