Richmond 64 Charlotte 56 - Spiders Prevail Over Niners

these amateur highlights are full of stocking stuffers for those at Christmas parties who missed last night's tough win over Charlotte...there's Bailey with assists, Bigelow's big slam to start the 2nd half, King hitting a three and fadeaway and finally Quinn beating the buzzer from Bailey...

this was a different kind of opponent and game than we had seen previously this season at the Robins Center...it was great to see the Spiders play tough defense when the offense was struggling at times, particularly from three point range...

I expect we'll see many more games like this one once the A-10 season begins...the 49ers looked like a competitive A-10 team...seeing the Spiders win one like this is encouraging

now if we can just get by the ominous "get away" game Thursday...regardless of the opponent several of these games have given us embarrassing losses over the years!...not again please!

Go Spiders!

Transfer Portal

I know we don't have room so aren't in the market, but thought I'd take a look. 461 are in the portal now. seems low, maybe due to the coronavirus situation. but saw some names that I thought we interesting including some former message board favorites:

Riley Abercrombie: we lost him to Boise St. he scored 23 points last season. not ppg.
Trey Wertz: he was linked with us early, way before his senior year. had 2 very solid seasons at Santa Clara. averaged 12 ppg, with 40% from 3 last season. has started 58 of 62 games.
3 guys from Cal State Bakersfield.
4 from GW
3 from UMass including Sy Chatman
3 from URI including Dana Tata
Shareef O'Neil: Shaq's kid transferring from UCLA to LSU
Charles O'Bannon Jr leaving USC

top 4 in the A10

from what we've seen so far, who would you project as the 4 teams getting the double bye this season?

I think we'd all start with Dayton. after that ... pretty ugly.
Joe's I guess. 7-2, beat Nova and Temple, lost in OT to Kentucky.
Davidson? beat Maryland and lost to undefeated Clemson by 3.
ugh. there's no 4th team worthy.

Mooney’s salary

Here we all thought it was “only” $1.3 million a year… The Collegian says last year he actually earned $2.7 million. But hey, at least we had a successful season…

OOC true road games under Mooney

Building off my theory that the outcomes of our out of conference road games are entirely too predictable, I decided to look at every OOC road game we have ever played under Mooney. Here is what I found:

• We are 25-48 in these games.

• Of our 25 wins, only 5 were against teams who had winning records in those seasons (JMU in 2012 and 2016, W&M in 2013, Wofford and UNI in 2021).

• The combined records of the 25 teams we beat in the seasons we beat them was 312-462.

• Our “best” OOC road win in his career was probably the Kentucky win, but maybe not, since they ended up 9-16 that year. Other than that? The others that I named, plus wins over Arizona State when they went 12-19, Wake a couple times when they were 13-18 and 13-19, and Seton Hall when they were 13-18.

From this, I think it's fair to conclude that we almost never beat any decent or good OOC teams on the road. I'm not sure what our expectations should be, but mine are higher than this. UNI appears to be a bad team, so I will give us a 60-40 shot of winning that game.

Schools Pay Athletes through NIL

Saw this on ESPN - I think we all assume major college athletics is heading in this direction, where the schools just pay the athletes directly.

New Plan: NCAA to pay players

The NCAA has drafted a rule that would allow "Division I schools to pay their athletes for the first time.

Baker outlined the proposal in a letter sent to member schools on Tuesday. Should Division I schools choose to accept the proposed changes, they would be free to enter into endorsement deals directly with their athletes and remove any cap on educational related benefits. They can also establish a trust fund for their athletes."

I don't think there is a paywall for this article.

What's wrong with Virginia?

Virginia used to be a paragon of law and order. The judges that have been appointed and the elected Commonwealth's attorneys are left wing hacks. DUI cases are not prosecuted. Criminals are allowed to commit crimes at will. Law and order has broken down. This 31 year old woman is a serial perpetrator. She has committed 63 crimes, most of them felonies. She has never answered for any of her crimes. Instead, she laughs off her arrests and her crimes.
