First off hope everyone here has had a wonderful summer so far!!! Of course popping in here seeing the schedule is first priority. o_O

Word that comes to mind is underwhelming. I feel present time it's probably more difficult anyway to get an at-large bid for mids so I usually go into season thinking win conference or more likely the A10 tourney. Funny watching a football game Sat., the announcer used the term power 4. So briefly researching if correct calling for a mid A10 finish in regular season play?

Turning positive I'm excited though with the potential of the roster Mooney and Co has put together for 24-25. Yes we lost King and three other key contributors. Though seeing roster page getting some added size with arguably Dartmouth's best player and good rebounder from AE in Beagle. Plus two good recruits from UConn and Mich dropping to mid-level play. Have no clue on starting 5 but appears Mooney has more total team depth at hand in choosing who top 8-9 rotation to play.

Main player for me expecting/hoping a big leap in play is Walz. Only one play but believe against maybe Joe's where making this turn-around 12 footer so effortlessly not in Quinn's resume. Like his added mobility around the basket and hopefully stays out of foul trouble. More Walz close to the rim and not outside playing as an assist big first. If anybody has seen him practicing this summer, please give me an update?

Okay forget the good, back to the bad and probably more appropriate the ugly. :(. Great get with Auburn but no other P4 opponents? Somebody research for me the last time a non-D1 school was on their OOC schedule? So which home game marking on the calendar for the diehards here is the must see home game. Belmont? FGC?

Selfishly back to the good or really good. Being retired now in SWFLA, we couldn't be happier seeing below! Funny no set opponents but who cares. Can it be any worse than home OOC?
Nov. 25 vs TBD @ Gulf Coast Showcase (Fort Myers, Fla.)
Nov. 26 vs TBD @ Gulf Coast Showcase (Fort Myers, Fla.)
Nov. 27 vs TBD @ Gulf Coast Showcase (Fort Myers, Fla.)

A few years back I "questioned whether Mooney ever attends the Final Four gathering" feeling not often and was resounding told by posters he does every year. Well reason saying that thinking as many years as a coach why so difficult for Mooney to get many good OOC matchups from rubbing shoulders and hobknobbing while there? Example again 24-25 schedule?

Maybe get some good mids to show up for the GCS. Anyone when updates show what schools will be participating in Fort Myers, let us know? As least it will be upgraded to Hertz Arena. 👍

GO SPIDERS!

Mooney signs extension

Hate these Busting Brackets formats (having to page through lists). This ranks Mooney no. 97.

Probably a fair ranking. I bet if were to average our NET over the past 18 years, it would probably be in the 90's.

re: Robinson "settling in as a four" ... was not a Mooney quote. more a paraphrase by Blue Ribbon. there are 6 contributiong editors handling the A10. (nobody I've heard of ... i.e. no JOC). I assume they didn't come up with that sentence themselves, though. all the detailed team info came from Mooney.

my understanding is that while you don't have to have a true 4 type, someone does play the 4.
there are roles to play in the offense and with out-of-bounds plays that are designated by positional number. we don't freelance out there. many guys do play more than one spot. not guys like B Artis or Walz, typically. but certainly Dji was playing guard and then Mooney talked about the decision to play him at the 3 last year.

Thanks for taking the time to explain all of that. I understand your thoughts a lot better now. Was that an actual Mooney quote that said Robinson, at 6'6, will likely settle in at the 4? That would surprise me he would say that. I could see that if he were a Peter Woolfolk or DWil type, but I don't think he is anything like that.

I agree we hear "stretch 4" sometimes out there, and that means a guy with size who can hit the 3. But, I don't think we or any team really bases lineups on having to have a 1,2,3,4, and 5 out there. There are just way too many times teams go big or small with all kinds of different lineups, and IMO the one thing coaches don't worry much about lineup wise is having to have a "4" out there. But, all good Sman. I see where you are coming from here.

Next year

Now u just made me get into a position numbers debate with you again....teams don't really play a "4" anymore.
not saying the 4 has to be a Kevin McHale, but most still distinguish between the 3 and the 4. In fact, Blue Ribbon's Richmond preview is all based on conversations and quotes from Mooney, says "Mooney likes the long term potential of 6'8" freshman Bryson McGlothin and 6'6" freshman Jaylen Robinson. McGlothin has great length, and while thin, projects as a capable small forward, while Robinson is an excellent leaper with quickness who is likely to settle in as a four at the college level".
Why would we limit ourselves with your lineup necessities when other teams don't do that?
they do.
Why couldn't Dusan, Beagle, and Walz play together?
they could. it's one of the options I don't really like much, but I mentioned it. I don't love those 2 bigs together because neither is a threat outside, but maybe it works if Beagle is a good ball handler. maybe I'm just hopeful the other big forward types (Dusan and AP) are so good we don't decide to have a 5 playing forward.
If Dusan, AP, and Walz, or Dusan, AP, and Beagle play together, who cares who is the so called 3 or the so called 4?
those groups certaintly fit together. doesn't matter which one is the 3 or the 4. I probably wasn't clear. I think we all expect Dusan is a starting forward. I don't care which spot. not sure if Dusan or AP is more able to defend a bigger forward or a quicker forward.
And, why say Dusan is a "4" (whatever that means anymore) when he has never averaged more than 4 rebounds a game? He was 42-99 (42.4%) and 49-135 (36.3%) from the 3 the past 2 seasons. Yet, you would play AP over him at the "3" just because he might be 1 inch taller than AP?
we measured both at 6'8". play them where they match up better.
Back to your original post about Roche, AP, or Tanner having to play the 3, why couldn't Dusan play with 3 guards and either Walz or Beagle?
same answer. Dusan can certainly play the 3 if we're playing 2 bigs. I just hope we don't.
I'm mainly saying, while I hope Tanner, Roche, and AP will all be huge factors for us, I hope the coaching staff is not limiting our lineup possibilities like you are by saying Tanner, Roche, and AP will combine for 40 minutes each game and never play together. Maybe I am reading you wrong, but when you say you only have those 3 penciled in at the 3, it seems like you are doing exactly that.
not saying they add up to 40 minutes. Roche could play minutes at the 2, but I think we have better guard options there. AP could play 4 and Dusan 3. those 2 are likely interchangeable.

2024 Richmond Spiders Football - Opponents Countdown - Wofford

The Richmond Ivy are new and different. New and different can be pretty exciting.

Everything about our program is dull.
  • Dull administration.
  • Dull level of football where traditional rivals have left for greener pastures.
  • Dull gameday experience.
  • Dull scheme with running the quarterback as the primary option.
  • Dull, meandering interviews
  • Same ole' voices calling the action.
Administration keeps handing out contract extensions like candy so they seem to endorse all of the above. There's little point in fighting any of it because nothing will change. And there are too many other fun things to do on fall weekends in RVA.

I don't see how the tide is stemmed unless Huesman retires and we hire a really compelling replacement. That may be another decade from now.
Agree with all of this. I look at what the Flying Squirrels have done to draw fans. No one gives a rat's a** who wins a Flying Squirrels game but they turn out the fans because they make it a great experience for fans to want to be at and they promote themselves extremely well. Same with the Richmond Kickers, who coincidentally play at our old stadium.

We actually have an advantage over both of them as we have fans who actually care who wins our games and we have a beautiful venue versus the run down venues that they both play in. But for all of the reasons Mo mentioned, we are what we are. It is a conscious choice and to me it all starts with our athletic leadership setting a tone that does not demand excellence in the entire operation from coaching to marketing to tickets to gameday experience.

It is like Chick Fil-A vs. the customer experience you get a Burger King or McDonalds. Chick Fil A demands great customer service so that is what you get. Burger King/McDonalds don't so you get served by a bunch of people punching a clock and getting paid. That to me sums up our entire operation at the Robin's Center.

Outside the box thought here. Fontel Mines. RVA ties, man can recruit. Hasnt been a coordinator, but sure he has connections to make a good hire. Recruited so many of Roccos top players.
The irony is that UR is in a great position to hire the next Chip Kelly or Dave Clawson. So many young, innovative coaches come thru the FCS ranks. Problem is that if the coach was successful our AD would have to actually work and hire a new coach (Amazing how that seems to have worked out for JMU football and VCU basketball). Instead of being ambitious and taking a chance at something great we settle for easy, predictable, and safe. Same approach applies to the marketing of our program. I'm beyond apathetic at this point because we are much more likely to go down to D III or eliminate football completely than to institute any real ambitious changes. The game days have basically become a minor league baseball game with slim attendance, no students, the occasional parents using the afternoon for child entertainment, and nobody seeming to care about the final score as long as we participated/competed in an event.

Open letter to JOC at RTD

John,

FYI.

New week, old question: Wickersham or Coleman at QB for UR?

Cam Coleman has been advised yesterday that he will NOT start v Chas. Southern.

Personally it’s a bad decision and not sure what the motives.

Last Saturday,I flew up to UR from xxxx to watch the game.Over my 64 years(since age 10) of watching UR football I have never witnessed such a debacle which on its face seemed intentional. Not sure what Coach Huesman is thinking anymore but he’s surely very good at losing spectator interest and support.

First, let me say that I'm sorry that I have essentially the same username as you. When I signed up I did not know you had this username, and apparently the site allowed me to essentially have the same name as you because I put spaces between the words.

Back on topic, I think we will be pleasantly surprised with the scoring and passing ability of Beagle and Walz. And hopefully Mooney will turn them both loose to rebound, I believe both of them have the ability to be better rebounders than Quinn and Grant.
So it's spacey vs solid? /s

Climate change and American Energy

Power outages occur in Los Angeles. Do you want power outages in Virginia? It's coming.
Heat waves with triple-digit temperatures are unpleasant, though not unusual during the summer in Richmond. Yet Los Angeles’s electric power system suffered widespread failures this weekend as temperatures surged, causing more than 70,000 utility customers in the city and surrounding neighborhoods to lose power, including the Los Angeles Coliseum and Hollywood Bowl.

How many of you want power outages during extreme hot or cold? This is why the transition to green energy will not work. It requires redundant systems to prevent outages. It does not work.

I feel lucky to have been a student during our hayday years, playing P5 schools, beating Tech in the rain, Barry Redden, Walker Gillette, Barty Smith, Tangerine Bowl win....and later, being there in Chattanooga in 2008 in the middle of a 17 game win streak.
I'll go ahead and say it...The good ole days. Sorry that you young guys missed out on all that because Richmond football will never see that again.
Starts with our milk toast administration. It's all their fault for not giving a damn about sports.
My good old days don't go as far back as you, but I hear you...Our tailgate crew has been to almost every home game and quite a few road games over the past 25 or so years. We were just joking about being admonished by Aaron Corp's dad on the hotel shuttle to Duke about the hard "P." I was like sorry sir, I thought it was pronounced like the Marine Corp...he was upset, but probably less so from his son losing the starting QB job to the butt fumble guy. Those were the exciting days where "any given Saturday" we might come out with a win regardless of who we're playing.

As a counterpoint, through the aughts and early teens there were a lot of my classmates and underclassmen of mine going to the games. They're all gone now and there's no one in their 20's and 30's at the games...I'm not sure they're even aware what they're missing out on.

The good news, even though our football program (and athletic department) has become a retirement destination, is that Huesman is eligible for Medicare in January, so maybe he'll head on down to Florida and we can get someone to come in that's hungry for bigger and better things.

The Biden Doctrine

Most importantly the withdrawal from Afghanistan ended credible American strategic deterrence during the Biden Administration.

This directly led to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the attack by Hamas on Israel and increased hegemony by Iran and China.

Remember also that there is a now a "working" strategic partnership between Russia, China, Iran and North Korea.

The Biden Doctrine

The withdrawal from Afghanistan was the defining moment of the Biden Administration. Here are a few points:

•There are still 7 US hostages in Afghanistan.
•A "significant amount of classified information was left to the Taliban” in the eventual rush to leave.
•The size of the U.S. Embassy Kabul instead grew during the retrograde,” owing to “a dogmatic insistence” on keeping a diplomatic footprint.
•The President’s refusal to maintain 2,500 troops meant the U.S. abandoned Bagram Air Base with its secure runway.
•That meant the evacuation had to be conducted in a panic from Kabul’s civilian airport, with security assistance from the Taliban.
•That nightmare resulted in 13 dead American service members from a suicide bomber.
•The report says “at least four Afghan civilians, including children,” fell to their deaths clinging to departing U.S. planes. The White House hailed the evacuation as if it were a Dunkirk-style triumph, when it was really a chaotic humiliation.
•ISIS is reconstituting in Afghanistan. The Biden Administration “has not conducted a single strike against ISIS-K since 2021,”

The Biden Doctrine

The House Foreign Affairs Committee has issued a report that is a 350-page indictment of President Biden’s choices at every point, a portrait of a Commander in Chief “determined to withdraw.” A litany of military advisers counseled that the Afghan government would collapse if the U.S. removed the small complement of 2,500 troops in country.

Silas Barksdale - 2025 Offer

The academic standards are a self-inflicted handcuff. The NCAA doesn't make us have these high standards. The A10 doesn't make us have them. We do this to ourselves - and since that is the case, you can't use it as an excuse when you don't get a recruit. I, like many on this board - went to UR many many many years ago. Is it a tough school - sure it is. But can just an okay athletes get by - of course they can, with the right support. Its not rocket science at any college. Go to class. Do the homework. Do the projects. Act interested and ask questions. Get to know your teacher a little bit. And even if you fail the tests - the teacher will likely give you a C. Cause they feel like you are putting in the the effort and time. I am not saying we take "Prop48" type kids, but outside of that - we should be taking any basketball player we can get.
Except North Carolina, Where they didn’t have to go to class.
